One of the oldest free weekly events in Manhattan is Dixieland Jazz with the Gotham Jazzmen, which happen at noon every Tuesday. Another example of an event that you can attend all year round on weekdays is Federal Reserve Bank Tour, which takes place every week day at 1 pm (but advanced reservations are required). You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. If you are classical music afficionado, you can spend whole day in New York going from one free classical concert to another. Lecture | The Contradictions of “Combined Development”: Some Reflections on Environmental Crises in India


Over the last two decades, the spectacular growth of the Indian economy has been integrally related to deepening forms of inequality and heightened forms of direct and indirect forms of state violence. Hyperconsumerism, in its various guises, by a small yet sizeable "middle class," land grabs by a variety of national and global conglomerates (especially mining companies), and the forced relocation of millions of poor and indigenous rural dwellers, are some of the highlights of the current development model. This paper seeks to explore some of the contradictions in this model by analyzing multiple environmental crises (ranging from natural resource privatization and depletion to enclosures and denial of livelihood rights) that have emerged. It argues that efforts by the state and capital to "manage" such crises not only uphold the basic tenets of a "growth" model but also deepen conditions of conflict and violence borne by the poor majority. Speaker: Ananth Aiyer, University of Michigan–Flint. A reception will precede the meeting at 6:00 pm.

Concert | Dinu Ghezzo 70th Birthday Concert


Dinu Ghezzo received his education in conducting, music education and in composition at the Romanian Conservatory in Bucharest (1964 & 1966), and subsequently earned a PhD. in composition at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1973. He has concluded a thirty-two years career at New York University, as a professor of music and director of the Composition Studies. Dr. Ghezzo remains as a Professor Emeritus at New York University, also teaching at Lehman College (CUNY).
