Discussion | 100 Years of the Arab American Novel: Ameen Rihani’s The Book of Khalid and Arab Life in Lower Manhattan

In partnership with Project Khalid and the CUNY Graduate Center: Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center, The Library is proud to organize an evening event -- with scholars, the Lebanese Ambassador to the United States, and acclaimed journalist Rami Khouri -- to celebrate the centennial of the first Arab American novel. In 1911, Dodd, Mead, and Co. in New York City published Ameen Rihani’s The Book of Khalid, a story of two boys from Lebanon who immigrate to the Little Syria neighborhood in Lower Manhattan and peddle on the streets. After exposure to the New York artistic and cultural environment of the period, the two return to Lebanon where, inspired by their New York experiences, they transform into political and social revolutionaries and become in conflict with the ruling Ottoman Empire. The work is considered the foundation of Arab American literature and is seen as a crucial influence on Kahlil Gibran’s famous work The Prophet (1923). Its author, Ameen Rihani (1876-1940), acted as the chief Arab American public intellectual in New York in the early 20th century and dedicated his life to teaching Americans about Arab history and culture.

Lecture | Afrofuturism

The Transdisciplinary Seminar on Afrofuturism explores how representations of science, technology, and social engineering intersect with visual cultural expressions of the African Diaspora. Science fiction is the organizing theme that unites the guest presentations and works under consideration. Visiting artists and cultural theorists lecture on the role of futuristic speculations in African diasporic art, literature, film, and music. The ability of science fiction to function as both a fractured mirror of historical experience and a projection of the collective desires of a displaced people is discussed throughout the semester. Kodwo Eshun is a British-Ghanaian writer, theorist, and filmmaker. He studied English Literature at Oxford University. He is currently course leader of the MA in Aural and Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths College. Eshun’s writing deals with cyberculture, science fiction, and music, with a particular focus on where these ideas intersect with the African Diaspora. He has contributed to a range of publications including the Guardian, The Face, The Wire, i-D, Melody Maker, Spin, Arena, Frieze, CR: The New Centennial Review and 032c. Eshun’s book More Brilliant Than the Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction (1998) explores the intersection of black music and science fiction from an afrofuturist viewpoint. In 2002, Eshun co-founded The Otolith Group with Anjalika Sagar. The group’s work engages with archival materials, with futurity, and with the histories of transnationality. The group was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2010.

Lecture | Global Issues in Design and Visuality in the 21st Century

Global Issues is both a course and a lecture series that is open to the community. It is designed to identify the broad issues that are shaping design and art—and in turn, culture—in the early 21st century. Beginning with an introduction to cultural theory, Global Issues looks at the ways design and art mirror, critique, and change contemporary culture. Guest speakers—drawn from the fields of art, architecture, and fashion, product, and communication design, as well as philosophy, anthropology, and design history—examine the concept of culture and its dynamics in light of the radical changes brought about by globalization. Collectively they demonstrate the unique potential of designers and artists to serve as both mediators and critics of culture through their studio practices. This lecture is presented by Sarah Teasley, tutor, Royal College of Art, London.

Talk | The Other Half of Henry Dreyfuss

Henry Dreyfuss, the most important figure in the innovation of anthropometrics in the industrial design process, was a complex figure who was supported by a talented staff that included his wife, Doris Marks, and Alvin Tilley, who drew the celebrated charts of “Joe and Josephine,” the “typical” Americans who were the subject of The Measure of Man (1960). In this presentation, Dr. Flinchum will introduce Dreyfuss’s firm and illuminate the complexities of its working processes. Russell Flinchum has been the archivist of the Century Association Archives Foundation in New York since 1999 and on the faculty in the MFA Design Criticism Department since 2008. He is the author of American Design (MoMA/5, Continents, 2009) as well as Henry Dreyfuss, Industrial Designer: The Man in the Brown Suit (Rizzoli, 1997).

Discussion | Chords and Discords — Musical Patterns of Affinities

The affinity tables established by chemists served as models for sentimental encounters. But the concordance and discordance resulting from affinities are closer to musical phenomena, where associations infinitely redistribute harmonic correlations. Pierre Bayard, author of How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read, will discuss this topic with Wendy Lesser, author of Music for Silenced Voices: Shostakovich and His Fifteen Quartets, and François Noudelmann, who explores in Le toucher des philosophes (to be translated) the relationship that Barthes, Sartre and Nietzsche had to their own practise of the piano. There will also be a performance, My Dog Is My Piano. Tocky von Arnim and Bettina von Arnim live together in the same house. They do not speak the same language, they are hardly alike and yet, they have assembled. In My Dog Is My Piano, Antonia Baehr sketches a subjective acoustic portrait of the affinity between her mother and her dog : can the house they share be read as the score of the stories of canine-human living together? What kind of language emerges from this  long  duet  of  everyday comings  and goings, of  these  choreographies of affinities?
