Dance Performance | Draftwork: Choreographers Deborah Gladstein and Molly Heller

Movement artist Deborah Gladstein collaborates with bassist/composer Garth Stevenson to create a site-specific tribute to the sanctuary at the Church. "In the Shadows" celebrates the poetic and mysterious possibilities of movement and sound. Using a travel-sized upright acoustic bass, the musician is free to move with his instrument through space so that the bass itself becomes another "partner" in the dance.,/br> Choreographer and co-director of JuMo Dance Company Molly Heller is interested in self-perception and the reactions that occur when we view ourselves through the "eyes of the ego." Heller's work stems from the following questions: In which ways do we compare ourselves to others? How does one respond to a compliment? Can you ever fully act as your true self? What is one's reaction to attention - do we shy away? Shine? Feign modesty? Are we aware of our masquerading self? Heller seeks to expose the world we thoughtlessly create.

Come and celebrate the musicality of el Día de los Muertos with this band that honors the Saint of all musicians. In an era and city in which Latin culture has given birth to many musical fusions, the Los Angeles based six-member band exemplifies the modern-day creative hybrid. La Santa Cecilia creatively combines uptempo South American rhythms like Cumbia and Bossa Nova with the nostalgic Bolero and passionate Tango, blending in Afro-Cuban percussion, and Rock with Jazzy tunes to bring about a mix that defies any particular label or musical genre. The band’s sound is accentuated by singer Marisoul’s haunting voice, which delivers its message of love, loss and heartbreak in a strong, sensual and powerful performance that leaves crowds mesmerized and women justified in La Santa’s colorful and fiesta-like live shows.

Screening | 2 Films by John Akomfrah: Seven Songs for Malcolm X / The Last Angel of History

In conjunction with the theatrical premiere of John Akomfrah's The Nine Muses at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), this is the the U.S. theatrical premiere of two foundational films by the British-Ghanaian filmmaker. Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993, 52 min.) - An homage to the inspirational African-American leader. Seven Songs for Malcolm X collects testimonies, eyewitness accounts and dramatic reenactments to tell the life, legacy, loves, and losses of Malcolm X. Featuring interviews with Malcolm X's widow Betty Shabazz, Spike Lee, and many other. The Last Angel of History (pictured, 1996, 45 min.) - An examination of the relationships between Pan-African culture, science fiction, intergalactic travel, and computer technology, this Afrofuturist cinematic essay posits science fiction--from alien abduction to genetic engineering--as a metaphor for the Pan-African experience of forced displacement, cultural alienation, and otherness. Akomfrah's analysis is rooted in an exploration of the works of artists such as funkmaster George Clinton and his Mothership Connection, Sun Ra's use of extraterrestrial iconography, and the writings of black science fiction authors Samuel R. Delaney and Octavia Butler.
