Conference | Sergei Eisenstein’s Unpublished “Notes for a General History of Cinema”

The "Notes for a General History of Cinema," written by Eisenstein in 1947-48 while he was organizing a Section of Film Theory and History at the Institute of Art of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, present us with a map of all the topics Eisenstein would have liked to discuss in a volume dedicated to the history and pre-history of cinema, a volume he planned but never wrote due to his death in 1948. What is surprising in these notes - structured like a long index - is the quantity and the variety of extra- and pre-cinematographic references (literature, music, architecture, photography, painting, theater, puppet theater, but also Western and non-Western popular feasts and traditions, religious rites and processions, moving from 'high' art to popular forms of entertainment such as wax museums, circus, etc.): a compound of some of the references Eisenstein had already discussed in his previous published and unpublished texts, with a new, strong emphasis on pre-cinematographic media as well as on the relationships with the avant-gardes.

Symposium | Escape to Life: German Intellectuals in New York

Planned to take place 65 years after the end of World War II, this symposium is intended to present a series of portraits to a wider audience. In New York, the US gave shelter to a large number of leading intellectuals from the German-speaking world, saving their lives in most of the cases. These public figures either stayed in New York where most of them arrived or moved on to California or other places like Princeton. Some of them - Brecht, Mann, and Horkheimer, for example - returned to Europe soon after 1945. The lectures of this symposium are meant to explore the impact the US, and New York, had on these authors/artists, and on their work. The speakers are also invited to analyze the influence these intellectuals had on American culture and the transformations which happened to their thoughts when translating them into another language, culture, and intellectual arena and addressing them to the American audience. Finally the symposium will discuss how those who returned passed on the American experience to Europe. The speakers may feel completely free to choose the specific angle (biography, theory, politics) or aspect (a single work, a personal constellation) they regard as elucidating. The conference is accompanied by an exhibition of portraits by Fred Stein.

Lecture | For Beauty Is a Series of Hypotheses?: Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick as Fiber Artist

To date, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick is best known as the author of a series of quickly paradigmatic texts on queer and affect theory, including Between Men: English Literature and Male Homosocial Desire, Epistemology of the Closet, Tendencies, and Touching Feeling: Affect, Pedagogy, Performativity. Much less appreciated is the fact that Sedgwick was also a devoted and passionate fiber artist, whose works were shown in exhibitions including Floating Columns/In the Bardo, Bodhisattva Fractal World and Works in Fiber, Paper and Proust. Join Jason Edwards, Reader in Art History at the University of York, as he examines a broad range of Sedgwick’s art works, contextualizing them closely in relation to her better-known literary theoretical and other works on paper, as the culminating presentation in a series of seminars on Sedgwick’s art. Edwards is the author of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and Alfred Gilbert’s Aestheticism: Gilbert Amongst Whistler, Wilde, Leighton, Pater, and Burne-Jones.

Join naturalist Karlo Mirth for an evening of exploration along the Hudson River shore, at the edge of the Hudson River Estuary. Mirth will help participants identify the crepuscular (active during twilight) insects and birds, as dusk descends upon the city. Dragonflies, Monarch butterflies and migratory birds settle on trees and shrubs to rest overnight before continuing their northbound journey. Crepuscular birds and insects’ patterns of activity are thought to be anti-predator in nature, since many predators forge most intently at night.

Author Reading | Sheila Rowbotham reads from her book Dreamers of a New Day

Welcome feminist historian Rowbotham for a reading and discussion. Rowbotham is eloquent and her newest book is ambitious, insightful, and uniquely organized in topical sections (such as: sexuality, work, parenting). This approach highlights the distinct and oftentimes discordant motivations and goals of women agitators while also revealing the messy process of social reinvention - rather than merely reporting its conclusion.

Concert | The Other Mendelssohn: Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel

The second of a 3-concert series featuring the major works of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, a composer of the 19th-century who was often overshadowed by her brother, Felix Mendelssohn. Recognized in The New York Times as “the dean of Mendelssohn scholars in the United States,” R. Larry Todd curates the series. Hensel wrote more than 450 works, most of which were not discovered until late in the 20th-century. This will be the first time in NYC all of her major works will be performed. The series continues with selected lieder, Vier Lieder für das Pianoforte, Op. 6, A Cappella Quartets, duets, and closes with Hensel’s String Quartet in E-flat Major (1834). A pre-concert talk by Todd on Hensel’s life and work will take place at 7 PM.

As its name implies, Genes & Machines is part man and part mechanism, channeling a warm-blooded brand of moody psychedelia through a bewildering array of electronic props and prostheses. Noise plucked from the ambient atmosphere ornaments earnest melodies and analog beats, all catalyzed by a hurricane of sounds generated by Leon Gruenbaum’s homespun instrument, the “Samchillian.”
