Conference | Anywhere and Elsewhere: Art at the Outermost Limits of Location-Specificity

Artists are increasingly moving beyond the white cube as a "prime" viewing experience to more actively explore spaces, places and times well outside the limits of traditional exhibition circuits. Much of this artistic activity is concerned with events, actions, relationships or processes rather than the exhibition of discrete distributable objects. This two-day conference will explore the challenge of exhibiting, viewing and evaluating art located elsewhere in space and time. How do artists overcome common assumptions that expanded and dynamic exhibition formats present barriers to value? How do we find appropriate language and evaluative criteria for discussing projects that often straddle art and other realms of knowledge? How might we more meaningfully account for art’s omnivorous ability to traverse diverse forms, spaces and places and evoke understandings potentially elusive in theoretical, scientific or philosophical propositions alone? This conference is specifically conceived as a vehicle for giving voice to artistic projects located anywhere and elsewhere in space and time.

Discussion | Art-Artusi: The Feast Days Food in Artusi Cuisine

As part of the first Week of Italian Cuisine in the World, Casa Artusi and the Emilia-Romagna Region organize an event for the launch of Art-Artusi, an innovative project aimed at promoting Italian culture all over the world with innovative tools and on digital platforms. The focus is homemade family cuisine, especially feast day specialties that embody the notion of 'Italian healthy lifestyle', which brings together high quality products, know-how, innovative research, the importance of ‘togetherness’ and food as a common language and as a way to meet and communicate with other people. This is the first time that a food-related hackathon is simultaneously organized in two countries: Italy, Pellegrino Artusi’s home country, and the State of New York, which has made the best use of a mutually beneficial cultural experience. Pellegrino Artusi (1820-1911) was the author of what is still considered the fundamental source for the study of Italian cuisine, The Science of Cooking and the Art of Fine Dining. Typical products from the Emilia-Romagna region will be prepared and offered by Casa Artusi at the end of the presentation. Panelists: Francesco Genuardi, Consul of Italy in NY Stefano Albertini Stefano Bonaccini, Emilia-Romagna Region Governor Gianni Riotta, Journalist and Princeton University Professor Simona Caselli, Councilor for Agriculture of the Emilia-Romagna Region Andrea Segrè, Scientific Committee of Casa Artusi

Opening Reception | Group Show: Open Sessions: Cartography of Ghosts

Open Sessions: Cartography of Ghosts explores architecture’s role in shaping human behavior, creating entrenched habits and modes of thought, and even standardized forms of intimacy. While the architectural spaces we occupy often obstruct our ability to intervene in or even fully comprehend the society we have built, they also bear traces of resistance, improvisation, and misuse that allow us to imagine other ways of being. Featuring the work of Regina Agu, Mustafa Faruki, jc lenochan, Florentine and Alexandre Lamarche-Ovize, Sreshta Rit Premnath, and Gabriela Salazar, Open Sessions: Cartography of Ghosts explores drawing as a tool to make visible the personal and human traces that haunt the public and material. Through objects, drawings, collages, installations, and architecture, the works conjure apparitional traces of a present and future body.

Screening | Latino Filmmakers

Cinema is a universal language of art, but in the U.S., Latino minority film directors have only recently begun to be recognized. The works of Guillermo del Toro, Gonzalez Iñarritu, Almenabar, Derbez or Pedro Almodovar have become mainstream thanks to Hollywood film distribution. This event will feature screenings of short films by Latino filmmakers regarding controversial social issues such as bullying, discrimination, euthanasia and radical religious affiliations happening in the U.S. The screenings will be complemented by a panel of Latino filmmakers, featuring a wide range of actors, producers, writers and former journalists that will discuss their own experiences and practices. They will discuss their purposes when making films, the lack of Latino representation in the industry, and how they evolved from other careers into filmmaking by reflecting on a brief series of questions moderated by the discussant.

Play | New Visions Directing Festival presents Vigils by Noah Haidle

Two years after a fireman died trying to save a baby from a burning home, his widow is clinging to the past – literally. When a handsome wooer arrives on the scene, the widow must decide between the past she knows and the future she can only imagine. A surprisingly funny and wildly imaginative story of love, grief, and the difficulty of letting go.
