Discussion | The Paradox of Rights

Called “meticulous” by Paul Gilroy, A. Naomi Paik’s (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) Rightlessness: Testimony and Redress in US Prison Camps since World War II examines the history of US-maintained prison camps and the “rightless” populations that they confine. From the campaign for redress led by Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II to appeals by “enemy combatants” being held at Guantánamo’s Camp Delta, Paik demonstrates how rightless populations protest US state violence. Sunaina Maira’s (University of California, Davis) The 9/11 Generation: Youth, Rights, and Solidarity in the War on Terror (NYU Press, 2016) “is an ethnography with teeth—gripping and urgent” (Vijay Prashad). Maira explores how Afghan American, Arab American, and South Asian American youth engage with the “political,” even while they are under constant scrutiny and surveillance. Both works reveal the possibilities and pitfalls of rights-based organizing and discourse. Moderated by Manijeh Moradian (Visiting Scholar, NYU Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality).

Opening Reception | Photographs: Neal Slavin's A Forty Year Chronicle of Groups and Gatherings

Slavin, a native New Yorker, began photographing groups in 1972. He quickly realized that shooting in color yielded greater nuance and detail, placing him among the first generation of photographers, along with William Eggleston and Joel Meyerowitz, to fully embrace color. Over the past four decades, Slavin has recorded hundreds of groups from the most obscure to the most celebrated, both in the US and abroad: Sabrett Hot Dog vendors, NYC; The Silurian Border Morris Men, Herefordshire; the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Salt Lake City; Elephant Keepers with Katie and Kumara, Bedfordshire; and the Mahayana Buddhist Service, NYC.

Opening Reception | Henry Chalfant: 1980: Photography from a Momentous Year for New York

An exhibition that explores a cross-section of a momentous year in New York history through the lens of Henry Chalfant’s photography. This exhibition displays 150 of Chalfant’s photographs of graffiti-covered subway cars, many of which will be exhibited for the first time. In 1980, in the midst of what the NYPD deemed as its worst year of crime, Mayor Ed Koch ran a successful campaign for re-election on his platform of law and order. In April, the eleven-day MTA strike gave writers extended uninterrupted access to subway cars while exposing the city’s state of chaos. Subway art flourished in tandem with the birth of hip-hop culture, when B-boys could be found breaking to the beats of DJs and MCs. Chalfant’s early recognition and diligent attention of this bourgeoning writing scene led him to photograph it and maintain the most comprehensive archive of subway art, documenting the work of significant writers including BLADE, CRASH, DAZE, DONDI, FUTURA, KEL, LEE, MARE, MITCH, NOC, REVOLT, SEEN, SKEME.

In 1929, Louise Nevelson was a disappointed housewife with a young son, surrounded by New York’s vibrant artistic community but unable to fully engage with it. In 1980, Nevelson celebrated her second Whitney retrospective. Her work was held in public collections around the world; her massive steel sculptures appeared in public spaces in seventeen states, including the Louise Nevelson Plaza in New York City’s Financial District.

Film | Alex Cunningham's Western Disturbances: Documentary Performance Film

A guide in how to not find what you weren't really looking for, Western Disturbances is a feature-length performance, multi-media, personal documentary film exposing the inherent folly in expectation as seen through the filmmaker's attempt to document the 2015 South Asian Monsoon. This program will open with a series of 16mm films entitled, Raining Ragas nos 1-6. Inspired by the structured yet highly improvisational style of the Indian raga, these six rolls of 16mm film, shot and edited in-camera, perform the filmic plea of a musical raining raga in hopes of inducing the monsoon. Shot in Kerala and West Bengal during the weak and delayed onset of the 2015 South Asian monsoon, Raining Ragas Nos. 1-6 reveal the anticipation, frustration, and confusion in awaiting the unpredictable weather system.

Performance | The Telling Project: Voices from the Long War

Lost in the media coverage of America’s ongoing military engagements are the vital, deeply intimate, human stories—stories experienced by members of our own communities across the nation, stories that are the reality of war, our shared history, and our path to the future. In 2016, The Telling Project partnered with U.S. Army Veteran Tom Berry to create Voices From the Long War. Scripted by Jonathan Wei, Voices from the Long War was the first time that U.S. military veterans shared the stage with Iraqi and Afghan refugees. Under the direction of Kevin Hourigan, Ali, Andrew, Assadullah, Liz, Maher, and Tom will bring their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan to the stage at the David Rubenstein Atrium, tracing how both veterans and refugees strive to return home—or build a new one—in an America removed from the war.
