Discussion | Every Name in the Street: Identity in French and American Literature

This panel will look at literature, both here and in France, and how it engages the work of identity in our era of political extremism and activist movements such as Black Lives Matter in the U.S. or the Nuit Debout in France. Considering language as a site of political struggle, and a reflection of the social constructions that shape our worldview, the authors will discuss the intersections between identity, language and politics. What is the role that literature plays in challenging our preconceptions and reimagining society? Featuring Raphaël Confiant, Zahia Rahmani, Claudia Rankine, Jacqueline Woodson. Moderated by Adam Shatz.

Lecture | Declarations of Friendship: Nonviolence and the Concept of the Political in the Middle East

The resumption of warfare between the Turkish state and the pro-Kurdish PKK has led, again, to calls for ceasefire and nonviolent resolutions to entrenched political problems. What ethical imaginaries underlie these calls for nonviolence? In what ways are the ethical horizons developed in these calls concordant with or discomfiting for a liberal understanding of human rights? Kabir Tambar, Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University, examines what he terms “declarations of friendship”: efforts by populations who are targeted as enemies of the state to proclaim their historical fidelity to the state’s foundation and preservation. While such declarations of friendship re-inscribe the rigid and often violently statist narrative of politics, their mode of address also enables creative and novel ethical possibilities.

Discussion | Race, Equity, and Otherness in Ballet and Society

Recently, ballet companies have been denounced for uncritically perpetuating traditions at odds with contemporary society and notions of racial diversity, equality, and social justice. In France, Benjamin Millepied is actively trying to push back against racial stereotyping in the ballet; meanwhile, in the United States, the recent rise of Misty Copeland as the first black female principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre has thrust this decades-old debate into the spotlight. However, in both societies, ballet traditions run deep and those who may have the most to gain from reevaluating ballet’s traditions and labels—minorities and dancers of color—are some of its staunchest supporters. Virginia Johnson, Benjamin Millepied, and historian Jennifer Homans discuss race, equity, and otherness in ballet, against a larger backdrop of identity politics in American and French society today.
