From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Opening Reception | Sondra Perry: Resident Evil: Video Work Examines the Racial Divide

In 1971, Sun Ra said "Black people need a mythocracy, not a democracy because they'll never make it in history.…Truth is not permissible for me to use because I'm not righteous and holy, I'm evil, that's because I'm black and I'm not subscribed to any types of righteousness." Sondra Perry's new video work examines this active disinterest in the respectability that blackness has been perpetually asked to earn by white culture. Through the lens of the Alien movie franchise— one which has been providing allegories of colonialism and mutability for decades—Perry's work asks: how do agents of power behave when their subjects become absolutely unpredictable, fluidly inhabiting societal norms in order to destroy them? How can these defiantly multiplicitous subjects be watched? And how is veracity redefined by this surveillance?

Author Reading | Antina von Schnitzler talks about her book Democracy's Infrastructure: Techno-Politics and Protest After Apartheid

In the past decade, South Africa’s “miracle transition” has been interrupted by waves of protests in relation to basic services such as water and electricity. Less visibly, the post-apartheid period has witnessed widespread illicit acts involving infrastructure, including the nonpayment of service charges, the bypassing of metering devices, and illegal connections to services. Democracy’s Infrastructure shows how such administrative links to the state became a central political terrain during the antiapartheid struggle and how this terrain persists in the post-apartheid present. Focusing on conflicts surrounding prepaid water meters, Antina von Schnitzler examines the techno-political forms through which democracy takes shape.

Ester Reiter is a professor emeritus at York University, where she taught in the School of Women’s Studies. She grew up in the secular Jewish left in New York, and is a member of the United Jewish People’s Order in Toronto. Her knowledge of Yiddish made this research possible. A Future Without Hate or Need brings to life the rich and multi-layered lives of a dissident political community. Author Reading | Kristin Reynolds and Nevin Cohen discuss their book Beyond the Kale: Urban Agriculture and Social Justice Activism in New York City

Urban agriculture is increasingly considered an important part of creating just and sustainable cities. Yet the benefits that many people attribute to urban agriculture— fresh food, green space, educational opportunities—can mask structural inequities, thereby making political transformation harder to achieve. Realizing social and environmental justice requires moving beyond food production to address deeper issues such as structural racism, gender inequity, and economic disparities. Beyond the Kale argues that urban agricultural projects focused explicitly on dismantling oppressive systems have the greatest potential to achieve substantive social change.

Author Reading | Jonathan Rose discusses his book The Well-Tempered City

As the 21st century progresses, metropolitan regions will increasingly be affected by a series of global megatrends: climate change with attendant droughts and heat waves, income inequality, educational and health disparities, aging, housing insecurity, migrations, and many more. All of these will be accompanied by a heightened sense of volatility and uncertainty. And the financial volatility of the interconnected global economy will only make many regions more vulnerable. But there are five characteristics that cities and metropolitan regions can develop to not only help prepare for these megatrends, but to thrive. Join Jonathan Rose as he shares these five characteristics outlined in his new book and discusses creating a higher purpose for cities.

Discussion | NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project

The LGBT community is vastly underrepresented on the National Register of Historic Places -- of the over 80,000 listed sites, only ten have been included for their primary association with LGBT history. NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project is commemorating important LGBT sites, as well as those sites that document the diverse LGBT communities’ significant influence and contribution to American history and culture. Project directors Ken Lustbader, author of Landscape of Liberation: Preserving Lesbian and Gay History in Greenwich Village, and Andrew Dolkart, historic preservation professor in the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University will be joined by project manager Amanda Davis to discuss the efforts to bring attention to what has been a largely invisible history. Site types include bars, clubs, restaurants, residences of notable figures, and community and public spaces. Donald Albrecht, curator of Gay Gotham at the Museum of the City of New York, will introduce the evening.

Discussion | When Will France Have Its Barack Obama?

Barack Obama’s election in 2008 was celebrated as the advent of a “post-racial” America, coming to terms with its diversity and redefining its identity. At the end of his second term in office, the political debate on both sides of the Atlantic revolves more than ever around issues of identity, of common values, and inclusion of minorities. Reflecting both countries’ singular histories, journalists Iris Deroeux and Jelani Cobb and historians Pap Ndiaye and Benjamin Stora will debate issues regarding political representation of minorities and explore how these questions figure among the challenges facing liberal democracies today. They will discuss the differences in construction of identity in France and the United States, and will explore what specifically allowed for Barack Obama in the U.S. and how a similar evolution could happen in France.
