Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. This tour takes place Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am and Mondays and Fridays at 2pm.

Tour | Chelsea and the High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to city markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the city to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park. This tour takes place Monday and Fridays at 6pm.

Opening Reception | Apocalypse, an Exhibition of Photographs by Hans Weiss

The first time Hans Weiss moved to New York, in the 1990s, the skyscrapers in the cityscape fascinated him. As symbols of power and money they force you to look upwards and to feel small. But during rainy days they appear to fall down into the puddles forming on the streets. Back then, Weiss took a few pictures of these reflections, in black and white. When he moved to New York the second time, in 2014, Weiss revisited this theme, photographing the reflections in color, which added an apocalyptic dimension. A closer look at these images yielded a glimpse into another world, with eerie colors, shapes and distortions, caused by the debris, mud, leaves, undercoating, dirt, and wind. Even the reflected people seem to stem from some other place, and some other time. In these images New York is set on fire, with buildings and trees in flames, distorted, falling apart or being flooded.

Theater | Jazz by Shakespeare: scenes from Othello, Julius Caesar, Henry V, Macbeth, and many more

Jazz by Shakespeare is a theater performance that incorporates two suites for jazz ensemble written by Duke Ellington. The music will be performed by a jazz group from Jazz at Lincoln Center. Such Sweet Thunder is one of the most masterful of the suites composed by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. It is inspired by scenes from Othello, Julius Caesar, Henry V, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet. Timon of Athens is a suite of incidental music which Ellington composed for a production of Timon of Athens at Stratford in 1963. The music blends Afro-American jazz stylistics and social consciousness with the themes of Shakespeare’s play: greed, generosity, betrayal, revolution, reconciliation, and resurrection.
