Symposium | #CubAngola40: Rethinking the 1975 African-Cuban War

Forty years ago, the Cuban government launched Operation Carlota, a large-scale military intervention in Angola while this African country was on the eve of its independence from Portugal. The Cuban military victory over the forces supported by the United States and South Africa represented an explosive chapter of the Cold War and of the African decolonization. The consequences were immediate and long-lasting, since the resulting defeat of South African troops contributed to the end of the white-supremacist regime of Apartheid. In that context, the intervention of a small Latin American country into the two main geopolitical struggles of the time was not only unique, it represented an audacious South-to-South cooperation.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. This tour takes place Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am and Mondays and Fridays at 2pm.

Opening Reception | Rachel Whiteread's Looking In: Scultpures and Works on Paper

An exhibition of new sculpture and works on paper by Rachel Whiteread. This marks the artist’s tenth exhibition since the gallery began representing her in 1991. Whiteread’s artistic practice is defined by her ongoing investigation of domestic architecture and the traces of humanity impressed upon such spaces. Using materials such as plaster, resin, rubber and concrete, she casts architectural elements and household items to yield sculptures that are uncanny ghosts of their objects of origin. By rendering the invisible wholly visible – the space beneath a chair, the darkness under a bed, the air inside a room – Whiteread compels us to see the world anew and look to the prosaic as a site for memory and history.

Theater | College Musical: Failure: A Love Story by Philip Dawkins

By the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead – expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs, and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River, before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual's successes or failures. Performances run November 3-7.
