Conference | Raising the Bar: Home Country Efforts to Regulate Foreign Investment for Sustainable Development

Much of the effort to regulate foreign investment for sustainable development focuses on the actions of host states, overlooking the role of home countries. In recent years, however, there has been growing dialogue over whether, in addition to supporting their firms in making foreign direct investments, home countries should also monitor or regulate the activities of companies operating abroad, for example, with regards to the disclosure of tax payments, or impacts on human rights, the environment, or development. Legal experts have argued that home countries have extraterritorial obligations under international law, including with respect to regulating the activities of both publicly controlled as well as private companies. The increasing pressure on home countries to monitor or regulate the overseas activities of multinational companies also results from a sense of moral duty, the desire for greater coherency of governmental policies and actions, and perceptions of potential political or economic self-interest. Yet, while home countries have influence over outward investors, are willing to exercise extraterritorial power in certain contexts, and are often committed to sustainable development, their policies and actions are not always coherent. This conference looks at home country measures that have been taken unilaterally or multilaterally to monitor or regulate foreign investment, why states have taken these measures, whether they have a duty to do so, what lessons can be learned from both successful and failed attempts, and what further efforts may be useful or necessary to regulate investment for sustainable development.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Lecture | The Changing Room: Time, Space and Light

A seminar featuring Adam Yarinsky from ARO and Jeffrey Schnapp from Harvard's metaLAB. How are our perceptions of time and space shaped by the constantly shifting movement of natural light within an interior space, and what role do architectural materials and finishes play in forming these perceptions? How can new lighting technologies expand historical applications of artificial light and affiliation with natural illumination? Given our rapidly expanding understanding of the powerful effects of lighting conditions on the human body, what can cutting-edge scientific research tell us about the impact on our health as we move through and inhabit these highly changeable and interactive spaces? These are just some of the issues to be addressed in The Changing Room.

Opening Reception | Red, Yellow and Orange: A 3-Person Exhibit of Abstract Paintings

The work of Ford Crull, Peggy Cyphers and Debra Drexler represents the best of contemporary abstraction: which is skilled and confident while demonstrating courage and invention. The contemporary sublime puts us in touch with what is elementally human, by erasing personal boundaries and supplanting surety with uncertainty and awe. The work of Crull, Cyphers and Drexler assert the primacy of painting by offering an unabashedly transcendent experience through the medium of paint. Archetypes of shadow and light reveal themselves, red, yellow and orange reflected in the water of life.

Opening Reception | Jiri Voves' Inscriptions: Paintings and Nail Drawings

In the self-imposed seclusion of his studio in an old house in the countryside near Prague, Jiří Voves draws, paints and etches his signs and codes. His introvert, contemplative nature speaks to us through an artistic language of subtle touches and interventions. In his work, he reveals the deepest layers and contexts of existence while acknowledging their inalienable mystery. The fundamental characteristic of Voves’s art is a kind of ‘tranquil unease’ that represents not only a symbolic portrait of the essence of being, but a means of fathoming its infinite complexity.

He is the author of many books of poems, a book of stories, and three volumes of translations, and he is the editor of several anthologies. He has received numerous honors and awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship, the Pulitzer Prize (for Blizzard of One), the Bollingen Prize, and the Gold Medal for Poetry from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1990, he was appointed poet laureate of the United States. Her latest book, I am the Beggar of the World, is a collection of reportage and translations of Afghan folk poetry. Her first non-fiction book, The Tenth Parallel, was awarded the Anthony J. Lukas prize and was a New York Times bestseller. Her poetry and reportage has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, among many others. Sarah Plimpton is a painter and writer and the author of The Every Day. Her poems, “as quiet as a moment just before sleep…are like preludes to dreams. From 9pm Deejay Spinach spins an exciting mix of US and European discs while you can sample Pálinka, one of the most popular drinks from the region and the cultural memorabilia on display. Come dressed as a historical character or a 1989 pro-democracy protester to get more into the groove.
