Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Discussion | Michel Foucault: The Late Lectures

A panel discussion with Seyla Benhabib, François Ewald, Bernard E. Harcourt, George Kateb, and Emmanuelle Saada. In his late Collège de France lectures, Michel Foucault opened up new paths for research, many of which have only come to light now as a result of the recent publication of the lectures. Ranging from the concept of security to the notion of truth-telling, to the relationship between veridiction and juridiction, to the arts of governing, the hermeneutics of the self, and the notion of "voluntary inservitude," the late lectures represent a font of new material to allow us to think with Foucault.

Opening Reception | Sculptures: Reuven Israel's Multipolarity

Composed of highly finished elements of various shapes, sizes and colors that are “skewered” onto metal rods, the sculptures in this show initially lure the viewer to ascribe to them a function or purpose. At second glance, however, we realize that these objects resist categorization, do not serve any familiar function and cannot be defined using existing vocabulary. Reuven Israel holds both a BFA (2004) and an MFA (2007) from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem. His solo exhibitions include: “Superpartners”,Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2011); “Fatima”, Braverman Gallery, Tel-Aviv (2010); “From Shapes to Forms”, Museo Civico Floriano Bodini, Gemonio (VA) (2010); “Range of Sorrow”, Montrasio Gallery, Milan (2009). Since 2012, he lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Author Reading | Timothy Kuhner reads from his book Capitalism v. Democracy: Money in Politics and the Free Market Constitution

Capitalism v. Democracy offers the key to understanding why corporations are now citizens, money is political speech, limits on corporate spending are a form of censorship, democracy is a free market, and political equality and democratic integrity are unconstitutional constraints on money in politics. Kuhner argues that nothing short of a constitutional amendment can set the necessary boundaries between capitalism and democracy. Timothy K. Kuhner, associate professor of law at Georgia State University College of Law, teaches international law, comparative law, human rights, campaign finance, and alternative dispute resolution.

Workshop | Bead Geometry Workshop

Where is the math in beadwork? A bead is anything with a hole – its hole is just a cylinder, and the axis of that cylinder is a line segment. So, a bead is just a line segment with colorful stuff around it, and those line segments can build geometric structures. During this workshop, mathematical artist Gwen Fisher will pull guests into her world of beaded cubes and cuboctahedrons. Best enjoyed by those age 7 and over.

Opening Reception | Group Exhibition: Scraps of Poetry

The exhibition presents five approaches in which artistic tools have been generated from the process of fragmentation and re-contextualization of language, space, and material, and which question space and occurrences. Exhibition spaces are understood as places of negotiation with their immanent identities, which are met on different levels: through deconstruction, reevaluation, and displacement. Site-specific interventions dissect and transform spatial and substantial attributions and their supposed implicitness. The exhibition includes works by Astrid Busch, Dagmar Buhr, Franziska Hünig, Antonia Low, and Michael Merck.
