Tour | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Author Reading | Kelsey Osgood reads from her book How to Disappear Completely: On Modern Anorexia

In this provocative debut, Osgood deftly weaves a courageous memoir detailing her ten-year battle with anorexia with subversive commentary debunking long-held myths of the disease and the media storm that surrounds it. Osgood describes the emotionally devastating battle she faced through three hospitalizations, revealing the cultish interior of the illness that encompasses both competition and camaraderie among anorectics. Through her compelling storytelling and critical commentary, Osgood has crafted a new kind of memoir for the modern era of illness; one she hopes will ultimately lead others to their own recovery.

Discussion | Life in Slow Motion: Energetics, Aging, and Evolution in Humans and Other Primates

Energy is the currency of life, and understanding how humans and other organisms use energy reveals a lot about our evolved strategies for growth, reproduction, and aging. This talk will examine human and ape energy expenditure from a comparative and evolutionary perspective. Surprising new results show that physical activity accounts for only a small portion of the diversity in energy expenditure among mammals. Instead, evolved differences in life history — the pace of growth, reproduction, and aging — play a much larger role in shaping our metabolism. A reception will precede the meeting at 6:00 pm.
