Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. But just behind the massive facades, lie facinating histories just waiting to be unveiled.

Talk | Fifteen-Cent Dinners

In 1877, Juliet Corson self-published a pamphlet entitled “15 Cent Dinners for Families of Six.” What motivated Corson to publish this pamphlet and who were the families that needed to survive on $3 a week, about $50 in today’s money? And what is it like to survive on a diet of organ meats, beans, and beef broth, totaling about 800 calories a day? In this talk, they'll look at Corson’s pamphlet, and talk about the effect it had on a population left destitute by a great depression. With tastings.

Lecture | “Extrastatecraft”

Observing that space has become a mobile, monetized technology, the talk considers infrastructure to be, not the urban substructure, but the urban structure itself. Some of the most radical changes to the globalizing world are being written, not in the language of law and diplomacy, but rather in the spatial information of infrastructure, architecture and urbanism. Massive global infrastructure systems, administered by mixtures of public and private cohorts and driven by profound irrationalities, generate de facto, undeclared forms of polity. The talk argues that this matrix space resists economic or political science to foster a political art with special techniques of form making and activism. Keller Easterling is an architect and writer from New York City and a professor at Yale University. Her book, Enduring Innocence: Global Architecture and its Political Masquerades (MIT, 2005) researches familiar spatial products that have landed in difficult or hyperbolic political situations around the world. A previous book Organization Space: Landscapes, Highways and Houses in America applies network theory to a discussion of American infrastructure and development formats. A forthcoming book, Extrastatecraft: global infrastructure and political arts, examines global infrastructure networks as a medium of polity. Easterling has lectured and published widely in the United States and internationally. Her research and design work has been most recently exhibited at the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York, the Rotterdam Biennale, and the Architectural League.

Slide Lecture | Objects of Time: Necromantic Devices and the Perception of the End of Time

With Kevin K. Birth, PhD., author of "Objects of Time: How Things Shape Temporality." The Professor, Department of Anthropology, Queens College, City University of New York, will speak about the logics embedded in the things that we use to tell time, and how these logics outlive the people who create them--hence clocks and calendars are "necromantic" devices, or, devices through which the logics of dead people think for us. The illustrated talk will discuss how users of objects of time can be unaware of these logics. For examples, it will discuss the Mayan calendar (and the 2012 "prophecy") and the current proposal to end the use of leap seconds as examples of logics created to address particular challenges in the reckoning of time.

Eliot Prize for Poetry in 2001; and NOX, an epitaph and book of mourning for a brother, seen through the lens of Catullus’s poem 101. She is also the author of the studies Eros the Bittersweet and Economy of the Unlost. Her classical translations include If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho and the recent Antigonick (with drawings by Bianca Stone). Eliot Prize for Poetry in 2002; Woods Etc.; Weeds and Flowers; and A Sleepwalk on the Severn, a poem for several voices. Oswald trained as a classicist, and her most recent book is Memorial: An Excavation of the Iliad, which focuses by turns on Homer's extended similes and on the brief images of the minor war-dead, each of whom lives and dies unforgettably - and unforgotten - in Homer's glance. She lives in Devon, England. Refreshments will be served.
