Lecture | The Boys from Vinegar Hill: The Jewish Youth of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum

J. Christopher Scott will be the guest speaker at a meeting of the Jewish Historical Society of New York. The Jewish kids of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum lived in a tough neighborhood known as Vinegar Hill, a now-forgotten Irish enclave around 136th Street and Amsterdam Avenue near City College. The HOA was a massive, two-square-block, Victorian Gothic pile that housed up to a thousand Jewish youth at a time who survived poverty, discrimination and danger. Scott is the author of The Boys of Vinegar Hill, a compelling tale of friendship forged out of troubled youth, romance, war and loyalty during the Depression and early days of World War II. Many of the characters and events portrayed in The Boys of Vinegar Hill are based on Scott’s experiences living across the street from the HOA. He spent a lot of time there – playing basketball, hanging out, sneaking into the movies – and got to know several of the boys well enough to call them his friends.

Opening Reception | Photography: Rona Yefman's Let It Bleed

The first US solo exhibition of Yefman is a chapter from an extensive personal archive, My Brother and I (1996-2009). As early as 1996, her younger brother, Gil, was Yefman's first model and inspiration. She began an intimate image record of their adolescence, using the camera to invent multiple novel identities in an imaginative world they constructed for themselves. This body of work became a joint archaeological journey, chronicling two siblings' symbiotic existence as collaborative artists, and their mutual desire to live exterior to the norm. The most complex part of this project occurred between 2000-2009, during which time Yefman documented Gil's intimate process of transformation from male to a female, and her subsequent transformation back to a biological male.
