Conference | A Mathematician’s Journey: Otto Neugebauer Between History and Practice of the Exact Sciences

Otto Neugebauer (1899-1990), more than any other scholar of recent times, shaped the way we perceive and study ancient science. Less known among historians of science but just as important is his role in the contemporary mathematical community. While tracing the ancient transmission of the mathematical sciences, Neugebauer was himself also part of a modern stage of these processes, and his career as much as his scholarship responded to his conviction that mathematical reasoning was a phenomenon unlimited by nationality, language, or culture. On the 20th anniversary of his death, this conference will cast new light on the many facets of Neugebauer's career, his impact on the history and practice of mathematics, and the ways in which his legacy has been preserved or transformed in recent decades, looking ahead to the directions in which the study of the history of science will head in the twenty-first century. Conference participants are: Lis Brack-Bernsen, University of Regensburg; Karine Chemla, CNRS REHSEIS-SPHERE; Dennis Duke, Florida State University; B.R. Goldstein, University of Pittsburgh; Jens Høyrup, University of Roskilde; Hermann Hunger, University of Vienna; Teije de Jong, University of Amsterdam; Agathe Keller, CNRS REHSEIS-SPHERE; Duncan Melville, St. Lawrence University; Mathieu Ossendrijver, University of Tübingen and ISAW, NYU; Christine Proust, Institut Méditerranéen de Recherches Avancées, Marseille; Lewis Pyenson, Western Michigan University; Jim Ritter, Université de Paris 8; David Rowe, University of Mainz; George Saliba, Columbia University; R. Siegmund-Schultze, University of Agder; John Steele, Brown University; and N. M. Swerdlow, California Institute of Technology.

Gallery Talk | Curator's Tour of the Exhibition Glorious Sky: Herbert Katzman's New York

Join guest curator Julia Blaut for a tour of the museum's newest exhibition featuring nearly 90 works—both paintings and works on paper—by Herbert Katzman (1923-2004). For this Chicago-born artist, New York's built environment became his primary subject and his enduring inspiration. The exhibition sheds light on an often overlooked side of the mid-century "New York School" through the work of one artist and his productive 50 year career.

Theater | An Experimental Musical!

Although a musical comedy, Promenade falls more into the category of Theatre of the Absurd. The most fitting description was given by Stephen Holden in a review in The New York Times for a 1983 New York revival: "This work, which suggests a mixture of Candide and Samuel Beckett viewed through Lewis Carroll's looking glass, is a little too avant-garde and absurdist to appeal to mainstream tastes. But in its odd way it's an exquisite piece of musical theater."

Dance Performance | Dance: Maura Nguyen Donohue's I'm not coming back / Benn Rasmussen's Black Ground

I'm not coming back explores changing states and physical decay. A clock ticks, bodies oscillate, shake, vibrate, jiggle, thrash, and collapse. Little red riding hoods hopscotch in tight formations that disintegrate into organized chaos, strangers offer candy, and a big bad wolf leaves a trail of breadcrumbs while wandering through an eerie landscape at childhood's end. With the gentle caress of a woman's clavicle or the crash of a mysterious black book hurling towards the floor, Black Ground unravels through a series of tense events. Utilizing foreground and background, Benn Rasmussen constructs a dramatic visual rhythm; revealing simmering layers of emotions residing underneath the performers taught actions. Performances are followed by discussions and informal receptions allowing both artists and audiences a greater perspective on the other's viewpoint.

Concert | Soul Understated

Claiming to be more of a "musical mother ship" than a band, Soul Understated’s name is a bit deceptive. That’s a good thing, though, because the soul can’t reveal itself unless a band bares all, which this group—with its big, brassy sound and swaggering guitars—does with abandon.
