Conference | Constructing the Balkans, De-Constructing Ourselves

“The Balkans” brings to mind concepts such as ethnic separatism, religious intolerance, corruption and violence. But to what extent are these things intrinsically “Balkan,” or are they in fact problems common to the Balkans, Europe and even the United States in recent years? Consider the following—more than a decade after mosques and minarets were being destroyed in Bosnia and Kosovo, their construction is being banned and disputed from Switzerland to Slovenia to New York City. In 1950, the Socialist Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina banned the burqa; sixty years later, Belgium and France are doing likewise. Various ethnic nationalisms led to the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia, yet today similar nationalist and separatist movements are gaining strength in a number of EU member states. Despite the Balkans’ reputation for violence, homicide and adult male penal incarceration rates in most US cities are higher than those in southeastern Europe. Despite the Balkans’ reputation for corruption, recent revelations of systemic corruption in international financial markets make the pyramid schemes in Albania and Serbia during the 1990s seem minor by comparison. And whereas images from detention camps in Bosnia during the 1990s provoked deserved outrage--one American television network, for instance, aired a program on Bosnia entitled “Land of the Demons,” and former US Secretary of State Warren Christopher famously called the Bosnian war “a problem from hell”—images from Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo remind us of how difficult it is even for the most advanced democracies to abide by international human rights conventions in the midst of war, societal breakdown, and state disintegration. Participants: Volker Berghahn (Columbia University), Dusan Bjelic (University of Maine), Evangelos Calotychos (Columbia University), Vesna Goldsworthy (Goldsmiths College, University of London), Robert Hayden (University of Pittsburgh).

Conference | States of Devotion: Religion, Neoliberalism, and the Politics of the Body in the Americas

This conference aims to promote and strengthen interdisciplinary dialogue about the changing role and place of religious discourses and practices in the wake of the transformations wrought by neoliberal globalization upon communities, societies and polities across the Hemisphere. This event is part of a multi-year project on 'Religion and Politics in the Americas' funded by the Henry Luce Foundation. Starting from the understanding that conceptions and models of “pluralism” or “secularism” vary across national contexts and regional geographies, we want to focus our attention on the ways in which the retraction of the state and the unrestrained acceleration of economic forces and market logics—neoliberal globalization—have transformed the experience of religiosity as well as the role and influence of religion across the Americas. As religious life has become increasingly channeled through the complex mechanisms of a neoliberal marketplace, the market has increasingly taken on roles and functions previously occupied by the state across broad social arenas. These transformations have not only affected discrete areas of social and economic policy, such as health care, education and security, but have also given rise to new private-public interfaces such as faith-based initiatives and discourses of volunteerism that have supplanted the discourses of rights. This shift has also required the production of new kinds of subjects, emblematized by the shift from citizen to consumer. We are particularly interested in the ways in which religious diversity has been variously enabled, foreclosed, harnessed and even commodified by the neoliberal state. In this context, we also wish to explore how public debates over gender and sexuality serve as flashpoints illuminating the wider workings of the state's ongoing negotiation with religion and religious difference. Sexuality and sexual life more broadly connect individuals to the state as citizens, to the market as consumer-laborers, and to the supposedly traditional values represented by religion. But how this happens, and with what policy implications on a range of issues, will not be the same in every national context. Confirmed speakers include: Ana Amuchástegui (Universidad Autonoma de Mexico), Roberto Blancarte (Colegio de Mexico), Tanya Erzen (Ohio State University), Liliana Felipe (Las Patronas), Emerson Giumbelli (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), Janet Jakobsen (Barnard College), Peter Kulchyski (University of Manitoba), Leda Martins (Federal University of Minas Gerais), Elizabeth McAlister (Wesleyan University), Bethany Moreton (University of Georgia), Kemy Oyarzún (University of Chile), Ann Pellegrini (NYU), Jesusa Rodriguez (Las Patronas), Pablo Seman (IDES/Colegio de Mexico), Kathleen Roberts Skerrett (Grinnell College), Winnifred Fallers Sullivan (University at Buffalo Law School, SUNY), Diana Taylor (NYU), Kimberly Theidon (Harvard University), and Sinclair Thomas (NYU).

Lecture | The History of Medicine and Health in Modern Central Asia

Incorporating elements of Islamic, shamanic, Indian, and Chinese medical systems, as well as modern biomedicine, twentieth-century Kazakhstan offers a rich field for inquiry into the use of medicine as what historian Daniel Headrick describes as a "tool of empire." Kazakhstan provides a vivid case study in knowledge transfer and cross-cultural contact, as the Soviet state and Communist Party used improved access to biomedical care and upward mobility for indigenous medical workers in an attempt to win the support of the local population for the Soviet project. Moscow's effort to entrench Soviet power in part through the use of medical and public health initiatives met with considerable succes, as methods that ranged from didactic to violent drove indigenous forms of healing underground. A syncretic system emerged in which Kazakhs continued to turn to both biomedical caregivers and ethnomedical practitioners. Dr. Paula Michaels joined the University of Iowa's History Department in 1997 after receiving her BA from Northwestern University and her MA and PhD from UNC-Chapel Hill. She is the author of Curative Powers: Medicine and Empire in Stalin's Central Asia, winner of the Association for Women in Slavic Studies' Heldt Prize and a finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award.

Talk | Home in New York

In the 19th century, New York’s bourgeois had to live in ever shrinking townhouses on "Levittown"-like streets of uniform brownstones with few recreational facilities and parks; yet their homes featured the latest in domestic technologies, including central heating, gas lighting and modern cast-iron stoves. In the 20th century, New York’s middle class moved into apartment houses, enticed by hotel-like services and high-tech gadgetry. But it wasn't only the features of these new "behemoths" that alarmed old-time New Yorkers; it was also the "problem" of who was moving into them. The genteel and rigidly homogeneous New York society of the Victorian era would yield to the 20th century’s much headier brew of mixed ethnicities of the 20th century. Architectural historian Barry Lewis examines such issues of what it means to be at home in New York. Lewis specializes in European and American architecture of the 18th to 20th centuries and has hosted many popular walking tours with David Hartman on PBS.

Opening Reception | Warhol’s Andys: Self-Portraits of the Artist

A large selection of Andy Warhol self-portraits from 1966 to 1982. The self-portraits occupied a central position in Warhol’s entire body of work and were important in the creation of his public persona. Controlling his own image, Warhol played with the art of disguise and deception. His self-portraits seem to tell us all yet reveal nothing. There are many Andys but Warhol remains unknowable.

Discussion | Developing Partnerships Between Choreographers and Composers

In 2003, the New York Choreographic Institute partnered with The Juilliard School to create partnerships between choreographers participating in the Institute’s Sessions and doctoral composition students from Juilliard. Each spring session, choreographers and composers listen and watch each other’s work and are brought together to meet and be matched by Pia Gilbert and Daniel Ott, Juilliard faculty members. For the Institute’s 10th anniversary celebration, a panel of Institute and Juilliard alumni will discuss their process and its culmination. The participants are composers Kyle Blaha, Jakub Ciupinski and Mathew Fuerst and choreographers Marco Goecke and Jessica Lang.
