Lecture | Thinking About Fascism

With Dr. Joseph Chuman. "I am not the only one to believe that we are in a dangerous political moment. The mainline press has become comfortable in describing utterances characteristic of this election cycle as 'demagoguery.' Some have even invoked 'fascism' to describe the disposition, ambiance and positions of Republicans who are vying to become the leaders of the free world. It is this that I feel impelled to discuss in that our times don't permit me to remain silent. Clearly we detect resonances to fascism. But just as clearly fascism is an emotionally explosive term drawing a direct line to Mussolini and Nazism."

Concert | The New York Guitar Festival Celebrates the Music of Sister Rosetta Tharpe

This year's New York Guitar Festival begins with a Mother's Day concert in honor of gospel/blues legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the godmother of rock and roll. She was America’s first national gospel star, whose famous windmill guitar moves lived on in Keith Richards and Pete Townshend. Playing everywhere from the Cotton Club to Carnegie Hall and the Apollo, Sister Rosetta merged sacred lyrics with secular rhythms in a scorching guitar style. Joining Luther Dickinson in the Sister Rosetta house band will be John Medeski – of Medeski Martin and Wood fame – on keyboards, as well as bassist Dominic John Davis and drummer Daru Jones, called "Jack White's secret weapon" by Esquire magazine. Southern blues-rock rising star AJ Ghent, whose family pioneered the “sacred steel” tradition of playing gospel on lap and pedal steel guitars, rounds out the string section.
