Film | Documentary: Felix Moeller's Forbidden Films: The Hidden Legacy of Nazi Film

A thoughtful, provocative analysis of the 40 Nazi-produced movies still banned from broadcast or public screening in Germany (except in a scholarly context) because they are considered too inflammatory or offensive. The Third Reich’s anti-Semitic films are well-known (among them THE ETERNAL JEW, THE ROTHSCHILDS, JEW SÜSS), but less famed are their anti-British and anti-Polish dramas, featuring heroic young Germans, mercilessly bullied by greedy, deranged foreigners. Nearly 70 years after the demise of the Nazis, do Joseph Goebbels’s notorious propaganda movies still pose a threat to civil society? See this galvanizing documentary and judge for yourself. Workshop | Meditation: A Workshop With Jim Rose

Is lasting peace and happiness not what all of us are seeking? Are not all our endeavors meant to bring us happiness and lasting peace. Yet why have we not found them? Is it really possible to achieve a level of peace and happiness that nothing or no-one can take away from us? The answers to these questions can help us realize that lasting peace cannot be found in the outer world in which we live, but found within. Come learn how the regular practice of a simple technique of spiritual meditation (explained and practiced during the session) can help us to achieve a lasting state of peace and happiness found through no outer experience. Join Jim Rose, Rutgers University, retired executive of Johnson and Johnson and a long time meditator for this lively and engaging workshop.

Opening Reception | Cleve Gray: Augeries, Paintings 1963-1964

Cleve Gray graduated Summa Cum Laude from Princeton University, where he studied painting and Far Eastern Art. Like many of his generation, he joined the United States Army during World War II, serving in England, France and Germany. After the war, he remained in Paris on the GI Bill, where he furthered his study of painting. During the 1960s he formed a close friendship with Barnett Newman. It was during this time that he experienced an artistic metamorphosis, dissolving his earlier cubist compositions in a sea of distilled color. This dramatic body of work marked the beginning of an artistic meditation that would last for over 40 years. The rigors of French modernism, the ethos of Abstract Expressionism and the calligraphic restraint of eastern art commingle with astounding affect.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Ida Applebroog: The Ethics of Desire

A self-proclaimed ‘image scavenger,’ Ida Applebroog has spent the past five decades conducting a sustained enquiry into the polemics of human relations. She explores themes of violence and power, gender politics, women’s sexuality, and domestic space using images stylistically reminiscent of comics, at once beguiling and disturbing. Appropriating mainstream media in innovative and surprising ways, this pioneering artist of the feminist movement and avatar of its enduring legacy transforms her canvases into the structural elements of an uncanny theater where visitors are both audience and actors.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Huma Bhabha

The artist presents new work in both of the gallery’s downtown spaces. In each installation, Bhabha draws from an expansive trove of references that cross genres, centuries, continents and mediums. Her inspirations are non-hierarchical, coming as much from popular horror movies and science fiction as from ancient artifacts, religious reliquary, Modernist sculpture and German neo-expressionism. The work can be read as an encyclopedic memory that maps, retraces, and re-imagines cultural history as an active interplay between decay and renewal.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Olivia Boudet's Through the Light of Presence

"Very early on, Olivia Boudet defined the horizon of her pictorial activity by setting it in the problematic aftermath of Malevitch’s final paintings. One may recall that the landscape stands out from the plane cut by the horizon. The image then removes itself from the world in the poverty of a secular icon for which it no longer has any face other than outlined and obliterated by the rudiments of blind geometry." - Christian Bernard

Dancing | Classic Soul Funk Dance Party

With: Sonny Knight and The Lakers The Rhythm Revue with Felix Hernandez For Sonny Knight and the Lakers, last year was equal parts unexpected and deserved. The creation of their debut album, I’m Still Here, nearly 50 years after a young Sonny recorded his first single, began a tidal wave of accomplishments that includes a successful international tour, critical attention from NPR’s World Café and WBEZ’s Sound Opinions, and plenty of love from their hometown of Minneapolis. These hard-soul powerhouses have quickly gained ground in their hometown, topping the Minneapolis Star Tribune poll “Twin Cities Critic’s Tally” as the best live act of 2014 due to their “high-energy…funk-blasting” shows. Soul connoisseurs to novice music listeners alike can find common ground in Sonny Knight and the Lakers irrefutable showmanship and exuberance on stage. Felix Hernandez brought his funky dance party, The Rhythm Revue, last year, and after celebrating 23 years of sold-out shows at the now-closed Roseland Ballroom. Hernandez returns with the New York institution to kick off the evening.
