Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Lecture | China-US Relations: An Unsustainable Codependency

The US and Chinese economies are locked in an uncomfortable embrace: Both have become overly reliant on the other in driving their respective growth models. As is the case in the psychology of human relationships, economic codependency leads to frictions, imbalances, and the ultimate break-up. Drawing on his new book, Unbalanced: The Codependency of America and China, Roach will argue that both the United States and China are now exhibiting classic symptoms of an unsustainable codependency. The challenge for the two countries is to address this shared pathology through a fundamental rebalancing of their economic growth models. There is enormous opportunity if they pull it off. There is great risk if they don't.

The contributors to the book Cynthia Carr and Gary Schneider discuss the community of artists in which David Wojnarowicz worked and offer an overview of his significance then and now. Artist Adam Putnam discusses the ways in which Wojnarowicz has influenced his own work.

Discussion | Satirical Representations of Hitler in Contemporary Culture

A panel discussion that examines representations of Adolf Hitler in contemporary western culture, ranging from feature films and advertising campaigns to political caricatures and polemics. The focus of the debate will be on Germany, where the critical memory culture that was set in place in the 1960s has recently been eroded by more satirical approaches to the Nazi past that have their origin in the Anglo-American context and the comedies of figures such as Charlie Chaplin and Ernst Lubitsch. Timur Vermes’ bestselling novel Look Who’s Back (MacLehose 2013) that imagines Hitler returning to life in present-day Berlin is the latest example of this shift in German memory and what appears to be a collective desire for a normalized relationship to the country’s troubled past. The author will be in conversation with New York Times book critic and author Liesl Schillinger, as well as Gavriel D. Rosenfeld, Professor of History at Fairfield University and author of Hi Hitler: How the Nazi Past is Being Normalized in Contemporary Culture (2014). The panel will be moderated by Gil Roth, host of the podcast Virtual Memories.
