Help NYPL build the geospatial library of the future! This workshop will get you oriented with the set of tools the Library has developed that enables librarians and the general public to add valuable geographic context to old maps by overlaying digital images of historical maps onto a contemporary digital map through a process called georectification, or "warping" maps. Discussion | Digits and Treasuries: How to Address the Fiscal Challenges of the Digital Economy?

A panel discussion with Pierre Collin and Martin Collet, moderated by Bernard Harcourt. The digital revolution has given rise to a digital economy that challenges our concept of value creation. Increasingly, start-ups and global companies serving millions of users are changing the rules and bringing radical transformation to all sectors of the economy, but the value added is slipping through our grasp. The productivity gains achieved through the digital economy have not led to increased tax revenues for large countries and global digital economy companies pay a low level of tax on their profits. A fiscal response is urgently needed. This discussion will explore what this fiscal response could look like and how countries might regain the power to tax profits earned by digital economy companies.

Lecture | Between Basques and Jews: How the Spaniards Became a Race

A lecture by Jean-Frédéric Schaub. During Spain's transition to democracy, the Basque nationalists resumed spreading the old theory that their people's stock had a biological specific profile. Non-nationalist Basque intellectuals reacted by reminding that the myth of the Basque racial identity was tightly related to the Spanish Medieval hatred against the Jews and the Moors. The lecture will present the vain quest for a Spanish ethnic identity, since the Renaissance to Modern times, by considering its relationship with both the segregation of the religious minorities and the fetishizing of the Basque purity. Reception to follow.
