Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Opening Reception | Cynthia Daignault's Das Tauschregal: Objects and Their Painted Representations

Das Tauschregal is an experiment in participatory economics. Daignault sent an open call asking viewers to trade "objects of value" for paintings. Thirty-one participants were chosen anonymously and each agreed to trade one object for its painted representation. All thirty-one objects will be displayed on a shelf beginning on the first day of May. Each subsequent day, one painting will replace the object it depicts. At the end of the month, the shelf will hold only paintings, exchanging concrete commodity for abstract representation, as in currency. Das Tauschregal suggests an alternative art market, exploring the notions of value independent of price (meaning, sentiment, aesthetics, formalism, power, influence and beauty). Cynthia Daignault was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and currently lives in New York. Her work was featured in a solo show at White Columns in 2011.

Author Reading | Rivka Galchen reads from her book American Innovations

The stories in this intensely imaginative collection have secret lives in conversation with earlier stories. In the tradition of considering Wallace Stevens's "Anecdote of the Jar" as a response to John Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn," Galchen's "The Lost Order" covertly recapitulates James Thurber's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," while "The Region of Unlikeness" is a smoky and playful mirror to Jorge Luis Borges's "The Aleph." The title story, "American Innovations," reimagines Nikolai Gogol's "The Nose."

Jazz | The M-BASE Ensemble

The M-BASE Ensemble uses oral dictation technique to improve musician’s melodic ear training abilities and their ability to distinguish new and unfamiliar rhythms and melodic passages. The music is based primarily on the compositions of Ralph Alessi, David Gilmore, Steve Coleman, and Andy Milne, where the students face very specific rhythmic challenges not normally found in standard jazz repertoire. Although much of this music doesn’t “sound like” traditional jazz standards, it draws heavily on the lexicon of that music. Therefore much attention is given to making a connection between the melodic and harmonic content of M-BASE and the more familiar jazz standards.
