Gallery Talk | Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

With Lee Kogan. Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche.

Screening | Documentary: Henrik Regel & Bjorn Birg's Unlike U: Trainwriting in Berlin (2011)

Filmmakers Henrik Regel and Bjorn Birg dive deep into the universe of graffiti train-writers in Berlin in Unlike U. The film explores Berlin's own "Writer's Corner" on the Friedrichstrasse, the place for sprayers since the 90's. Unlike U is 7 years in the making and beautifully documents the intensity with which these artists live out their passion. The film also shows the radical determination one needs to lead this lifestyle. Out every night, at half past one am, just so they can avoid the security guards doing their rounds. This is not much for some, but for some, it's life. 90 min. Q& A with director Henrik Regel via Skype from Berlin along with a disguised train writing artist, BAS2 of the infamous GHS Crew.
