Gallery Talk | Curator's Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

With Lee Kogan. Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche.

Talk | David Harper, curator at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, discusses his work

Harper rejects the suggestion that curation exclusively generates or enforces art world standards. Instead, his curatorial method involves discussing, developing, executing, and pitching his concepts in conjunction with the artists being exhibited. His most recent exhibition, BCC#7, held on March 9, was a live collaboration at STADIUM Gallery between six New York and six European artists. The BCC series “finds potential through the act of translation.” Harper will share the documentation of BCC#7 with The New School and explain the experience, speaking specifically about the significance of his involvement as a curator throughout the project. Networking with artists, documenting exhibits, and mediated collaboration and communication through social networking will be discussed. The event concludes with a Q&A session.

Talk | Great Houses of Havana: A Century of Cuban Style

Architect and author Hermes Mallea gives the first-ever insider's tour of Havana's architectural gems. This talk, based on Mallea’s book of the same title, traces the evolution of the Cuban home from its traditional Spanish colonial roots to the "tropical Modernist" villas of the 1950's. Mallea will take you on a journey through some of Havana's most fantastic residences analyzing their design and decoration, and introducing the architects and larger-than-life patrons who made Havana "the Paris of the Caribbean." The author, who is a collector of vintage Cuban photography, puts a personal face on the city's great houses by including family photographs and first-hand familial anecdotes that allow him to tell a more complete story than the ones usually found in a design book.

Screening | First Features 4

First Features is a student-run screening series dedicated to the many exemplary and auspicious debuts in cinematic history. While there are certain aesthetic exceptions, the films screened in the series are all "first" works in some sense (debuts, first color films, etc..). Previous screenings have run the gamut from both celebrated debuts such as Citizen Kane, Breathless, and Eraserhead to more obscure and recent debuts like Guy Maddin's Tales from the Gimli Hospital and Agnes Varda's La Pointe Courte. Before each screening, a student or faculty member with an interest/expertise in the feature gives a brief introduction in which they consider just what makes this first feature an exemplary model of a debut, both in thematic and formal terms. Screenings are usually followed by a Q&A with the presenter, with prizes awarded for a particularly thoughtful inquiry or observation. Beverages and food are typically served before and after the screening and attendees are encouraged to stick around for a post-screening reception.

Performance | Performance Art: Anna Mendelssohn's Cry Me a River

Anna Mendelssohn will perform her solo piece in its entirety. The piece walks the thin line between the personal and the political and deals with the complexity of climate change communication and its rhetoric, playing with the monologue-format and focusing on the multiplicity of talking heads, voices and opinions buzzing around this topic. Emotions of fear, anger, hope and despair, strongly connected with visions of a changing climate are chemically reproduced or bio-engineered whenever necessary. Viennese native Anna Mendelssohn (photo by Cornelius Wachinger) studied Acting at Dartington College of Arts and at the School of Performing Arts at Bretton Hall, U.K. In 2004 she joined the toxic dreams company in Vienna and has since performed in more than 15 of their productions. Additionally, she has also worked with numerous other directors and choreographers, such as David Mayaan for the Wiener Festwochen production The Family Table, and André Turnheim at the Landestheater Linz (Venus im Pelz). Since 2008 she she has toured with SUPERAMAS for the production Empire (Art&Politics).
