Lecture | Falcone and Borsellino: Truth and Memory

A lecture by Prof. John Dickie (University College, London). In 1992, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, two magistrates who had become figureheads of the struggle against Cosa Nostra, were both murdered by savage mafia bombs. To mark the twentieth anniversary, John Dickie will retell the story of the massacres in Palermo in 1992, showing that the struggle to shape how they would be remembered in the future was an integral aspect of how those shocking and epoch-making events were lived out at the time.

Discussion | The Anatomy of Campaign Finance: Money's Powerful Influence on US Politics and Policy

The power of campaign donations to shape political decisions is front and center in the 2012 presidential election. Citizens United, the Supreme Court decision that allowed corporations, mega-donors and unions to invest vast resources in candidates' campaigns, has been called an undemocratic giveaway to social and economic elites. Does their growing electoral power undermine the public interest, or simply increase the public visibility of candidates' messages and influence? What are the long-term implications for our political culture and public policy? And what are the prospects for meaningful change? Featuring: Jacob Hacker, director of the Institution for Social and Policy Studies and professor of political science at Yale University; co-author of Winner-Take-All Politics: How Washington Made the Rich Richer and Turned Its Back on the Middle Class. Joseph Hagan, contributing writer to Vanity Fair and New York magazine; author of The Coming Tsunami of Slime: How Super-PACs, vulnerable candidates, and armies of mercenaries will converge to create the ugliest campaign ever. Moderated by: Jeff Smith, assistant professor of politics and advocacy.

Lecture | Greenwich Village: A Century of Architectural Terra Cotta

A lecture by Susan Tunick, Founder & Director of Friends of Terra Cotta. Though Greenwich Village has always been known as an idiosyncratic and vibrant part of New York, many are unaware that this area was in the forefront of experimentation with American-made terra cotta. It is commonly assumed that terra cotta was not actively produced in this country until the 1870s and 1880s. However, new evidence shows that terra cotta was being used in architecture as early as 1849. A number of these buildings survive today, including a major example in the Village. We will focus on these early beginnings and move through major developments in terra cotta with examples from Greenwich Village, including a late example completed in the 1960s.

Discussion | The Politics of Crime

With Julia Pomeroy, moderator, and panelists, Joseph Kanon, H. T. Narea, Laura Joh Rowland, and Mary Stanton of Mystery Writers of America -- The New York Chapter. Politics and crime is an ancient tradition that never dies. Macbeth murdered his way to the throne, King David used political power to send his romantic obstacle into battle, and corrupt governors are still trying to sell public appointments. Whether the crime is committed for political purposes, covered up by political power or made possible by political position, crime and politics go together Our panel has written about bad behavior from small towns to the global stage to the long-ago and far-away. And it all looks familiar.

Film | Korean Cinema: Kim Dae-woo's The Servant (2010)

This retelling of Chunhyang-jeon (Korea’s version of Romeo & Juliet which has been remade hundreds of times) is told from the point-of-view of Bang-Ja (Kim Ju-Hyuk), a servant of the young scholar Lee Mong-lyong. Bang-Ja is normally an incidental character in Chunhyang-jeon who does little more than act as a go-between for the star-crossed lovers, but here he’s elevated to center stage and the result is a funny, touching, unexpected twist on a classic tale.
