Slide Lecture | Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library

New technological, economic and social conditions in history, as seen, for example, in architecture and applied arts, mostly started within existing formal styles, gradually searching for their own face and facades adequate for their new methods of construction, utilitarian functions, representative appearance and application of symbolic details. The whole 19th century contributed to dynamic developments in every field, allowing a greater selection of building styles and fashions. New York before the First World War was a great melting pot of new people, activities, requirements, funding and opportunities. The Stephen A, Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library is a beautiful example of the Beaux Arts architecture that applied neoclassical components. This illustrated presentation contemplates the logic, social and psychological requirements behind creating neo historic styles when new building opportunities turned to borrowing and re-creating older historic architectural elements.

Author Reading | T.J. English discusses his book The Savage City: Race, Murder, and a Generation on the Edge

An evening with New York Times bestselling author T.J. English, as he discusses his recent publication. For anyone who wants to understand contemporary America, the civil rights era remains one of the most inspiring—and troubling—periods in our history. Though America’s struggle with race relations at the time is usually told through the dramatic struggles of the South—in places like Selma, Montgomery, and Memphis—similar, if less well-remembered, conflicts were taking place in major urban cities in the North. The Savage City explores the story of this volatile period in New York City’s history through the eyes of three desperate men—an innocent man wrongly accused of murder, a corrupt cop, and a militant Black Panther.
