Opening Reception | Sculpture: Lucy Hodgson's Unnatural Disasters

Hodgson's natural/man-made hybrids are a biting commentary on today's environmental plight. These new works focus on forms, which act as converters and receptors. Ambiguous geometric forms, masking the process that mysteriously converts tree forms into metal piping, or vice versa. Emerging and melding into the gallery space, these works, though playful and even humorous, hold a sinister reminder of what havoc humans have reeked on the natural world.

Opening Reception | Painting: Mary Henderson's Bathers

Henderson's newest group of hyper-real sociological oil paintings derived from found web images, focusing on a particular cultural experience - in this case, the 'summer retreat.' Her paintings are based on vacation photos and snapshots of Americans engaged in the long-standing, class-specific summer ritual of departing the city and suburbs for shore and lake houses during the summer season. The images explore the contradictory nature of these escapes - both their sensory pleasures and their accompanying feelings of isolation, dislocation and wistfulness.

Discussion | Authors & Editors with Anna North and Reagan Arthur

Put in a comma, delete that paragraph, move that sentence . . . the relationship between a writer and editor is more than a series of suggestions, it’s a complex web of trust that relies on give and take and mutual respect. In this new series, we’ve asked three writers to sit down with their editors to give us a sneak peak into that relationship and the elements it takes to make a stack of pages into a fully formed Anna North book. Reagan Arthur’s eponymous imprint at Little, Brown, and Company will publish Jezebel.com writer Anna North’s dystopian America Pacifica this spring.

Author Reading | Authors David Goodwillie and Aryn Kyle read their work

"American Subversive skillfully spins the themes of morality, loyalty, and patriotism into an insightfully entertaining commentary on modern history and contemporary society. Don’t mistake a buried exegesis for seriousness, though. David Goodwillie’s wit serves his story well—in addition to all of the perfectly authentic character quirks, there’s some wry terrorist banter, playful Post-style headline writing, and loads of well-informed satire. This is a fast-paced, engaging novel of pop-culture and big ideas, authentically subversive, and thoroughly American.”—The Daily Beast Aryn Kyle, whose award winning novel The God of Animals was hailed as “reason for readers to rejoice” (USA Today), turns her gift for storytelling to the lives of girls and women in this spectacular collection. These eleven stories showcase Kyle’s keen eye for character, her humor, and her uncanny grasp of the loneliness, selfishness, and longing that underlie female experience. Kyle gives us a collection radiant with bittersweet revelations and startling insights, and secures her reputation as a major young talent.

Author Reading | Chester Brown discusses his book Paying for It

Chester Brown has never shied away from tackling controversial subjects in his work. As the cartoonist of the autobiographical The Playboy and the biography Louise Riel, Paying For It is a natural progression for Brown as it combines the personal and sexual aspects of his autobiographical work with the polemical drive of Louis Riel. Paying For It offers an entirely contemporary exploration of sex work-from the timid john who rides his bike to meet his escorts, wonders how to tip so as not to offend, and reads Dan Savage for advice, to the modern-day transactions complete with online reviews, seemingly willing participants, and clean apartments devoid of cliched street corners, drugs, or pimps.

Concert | Tatiana Kochkareva, Singer/Songwriter

"Moscow-born singer-songwriter Tatiana Kochkareva studied voice with a student of the great Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich. As it turns out, that auspicious beginning has fully played out—if not in sardonic symphonies, then in a light-footed brand of songwriting informed by Kochkareva’s ocean-spanning life. Her voice eschews indie preciousness for richer timbres, bringing a worldly depth to songs about everything from personal triumph and tragedy to social graces and dreams." - The Brooklyn Academy of Music
