Renner builds models of his studio, furnishes them with accoutrements of artistic practice, and finally, photographs the results. Workshop | The Art of Memoir and the Personal Essay

Using what might seem to be an insignificant or ordinary event and then making it universal in scope, the best personal essays and memoirs illuminate and transcend the subject so that the reader—and often the writer—learns something important about him or herself. Best described as a combination of a letter and a short story, the personal essay can tackle weighty subjects like birth, death and marriage, or lighter moments like buying a new car or playing touch football in the park. By using written examples, you will learn how to come up with ideas for essays and memoirs and how to construct them. With Charles Salzberg, who has published articles and essays in New York, Esquire, GQ, New York Times and other periodicals.

Author Reading | Authors Barbara Browning and Jay Neugeboren read their work

In Browning's The Correspondence Artist, Vivian, a writer, is carrying on a relationship with an internationally acclaimed artist. There are those who stand to profit—and suffer—from the revelation of her paramour's identity, so in the service of telling her tale, she creates a series of fictional lovers. Largely through Vivian's e-mail correspondence, she divulges the story of their relationship. In Neugeboren's You Are My Heart, stories travel from the secluded villages in the south of France, to the cattle crawl in the Valley of a Thousand Hills in South Africa, to the hard-knock adolescent streets of Brooklyn, and examines the great mysteries and complexities that unsettle and comprise human relationships.
