Slide Lecture | Jewish Sites of the Greater Middle East

Jewish historical sites exist throughout the Greater Middle East region beyond just Israel, many dating back to the earliest parts of the Torah and biblical writings. Others reflect an époque when the region was a haven welcoming Jews after the Spanish Inquisition. Since the foundation of Israel and the emigration of Jews from many countries throughout the region, many of the sites have been abandoned and left to decay. In his talk, travel writer and professor Michael Luongo takes us to Morocco, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries to look at the physical legacies of these once thriving communities and efforts to restore some of the most important historical Jewish sites and open them to tourism.

Lecture | Twenty-Five Years After the Fall of the Berlin Wall: Reflections on a United Germany in a Troubled Europe

A lecture by sociologist and historian Wolf Lepenies. In the murderous 20th century that experienced two world wars, the Holocaust, and the threat of atomic annihilation, the fall of the Berlin Wall was a rare moment of happiness. In hindsight, November 9, 1989 and October 3, 1990 (the day of German re-unification) merge into a single event. Twenty-five years ago, things were more complicated. Wolf Lepenies will talk about developments in Europe that are closely linked to the process of German re-unification and have their foci in four different countries: These are 1. France or The New North-South Conflict within Europe, 2. Hungary or The Scandal of an Illiberal Democracy, 3. Poland or The Failure of the Weimar Triangle, 4. Ukraine or The Lost Virtue of Ambiguity.

Author Reading | Contributors read from I See in the Sea

Through dialogue and reflection, an exhibition which took place at the Camera Club of New York in April 2014, I see in the sea nothing except the sea. I don't see a shore. I don't see a dove. is re-considered. The document tells us nothing. Let's begin there. Now, what is the site? Is it here or is it there? How do we tell this story? A conscious choice is made to tell it otherwise-to mull over media, memorial, technology, detention. That which is unseen begins to leak, and slowly we begin to see: blue, white, foam, waves. The tide is rising. Can we separate art and the way we choose to live? How do we rearrange our desires?

Yarn/Wire is a quartet of two percussionists and two pianists. This instrumental combination allows the ensemble flexibility to slip effortlessly between classics of the repertoire and modern works that continue to forge new boundaries. Founded in 2005, Yarn/Wire is admired for the energy and precision they bring to performances of today's most adventurous music.
