Discussion | On the Legalization of Marijuana

This panel takes up contemporary debates surrounding the legalization of marijuana. They consider the implications of the politics and policies of the “war on drugs;” the incarceration of black men for drug-related crimes and infractions; the medical uses of marijuana; and the social implications of the recreational use of marijuana, particularly in regards to children. They pay particular attention to recent groundbreaking works, such as Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. Our panel will be led by Ethan Nadelman, who is described by Rolling Stone as "the point man" for drug policy reform efforts, and is widely regarded as the outstanding proponent of drug policy reform both in the United States and abroad. He is the author of the Cops Across Borders (1993) and co-author of Policing the Globe (2008). A reception will follow the event.

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Julia Kunin's Les Guérillères

The sculptural works in Kunin’s repertoire and her embrace of things scientific, natural and geological have recently begun a transformation from ‘macro’ to ‘micro’, with a new focus on crystalline, molecular structures. The otherworldly semi-figurative aggregates, still baroque in feeling, now consist of rhombohedral elements, ancient stair-stepped geometric forms that seem to reproduce from the inside out. Some present as female; others, alien-like or non-gender specific. Whether wall mounted or free standing, Kunin’s intricate sculptures become even more animated with the play of light on their iridescent surfaces.

Author Reading | Christina Crosby discussess her book Body Undone: Living on After Great Pain

In 2003, Crosby, a professor of English and feminist, gender, and sexuality studies at Wesleyan University, broke her neck in a bicycle accident. She grapples directly with the physical deficits of quadriplegia suddenly encountered at age 50 and refuses to look away from the rawness of grief over the loss of her active, athletic life. The book is an exploration of embodiment that reaches back to the author’s childhood as a tomboy in small-town Pennsylvania, her brother’s life with (and death from) multiple sclerosis, and the feminist and gay liberation movements of the 1970s that were, for her, thrilling life affirmations. In the end, queer commitments create life-sustaining possibility lived in an undone body.
