Discussion | Reflections and Readings from Estimating Emerson: An Anthology of Criticism from Carlyle to Cavell

Ralph Waldo Emerson is internationally renowned as helping define American identity as we know it. What is less known is the degree to which he has inspired and influenced generations of other internationally celebrated writers and thinkers. As "America's Plato," it is perhaps not surprising that Emerson has drawn a great amount of critical (in both senses of the word) attention; what is surprising, though, is the fact that so much of the attention was given by the likes of Thomas Carlyle, Matthew Arnold, the James brothers, Walt Whitman, D. H. Lawrence, George Santayana, Marcel Proust, Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, John Updike, and William Gass. Estimating Emerson is the most comprehensive collection yet assembled of the finest minds writing on one of America's finest minds. It serves as both a resource for easily accessing the abundant and profound commentary on Emerson's work and as a compendium of exceptional prose to inspire further thought about his contribution to our thinking.

Opening Reception | Coke Wisdom O’Neal’s Happy Little Accidents, a Photographic “Collaboration” with Hurricane Sandy

This latest series of photographs is the result of unlikely circumstances, namely Superstorm Sandy. This exhibition marks a moment of departure from O’Neal’s regular pattern of working. Instead of constructing a rigid environment to explore identity, O’Neal embraces a chance collaboration in which water creates the frame and reinterprets his subject. On October 29, 2012, O’Neal’s Red Hook studio suffered total destruction. Tools, books, completed artwork, and unfinished pieces were ruined. And yet, as the floodwaters receded, a series of old family slides emerged reborn.

Opening Reception | Installation: Will Kurtz's Another Shit Show

The second solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Will Kurtz. Using the empty gallery as a site on which to stage operatic, all-encompassing mise-en-scene, Kurtz makes an ambitious, multi-part figure installation that throws the facade off human nature - albeit in canine terms. Constructed of unlikely materials such as newspaper, glue, wire and wood, more than 20 dogs of every breed, size and color, strain and cavort off the leash of a single human handler, each rendered more expressively than the next.

Discussion | On Display: The Taboo Stool

For The Global Africa Project, a 2010 exhibition on contemporary visual culture in Africa, the museum included the Taboo stool by the industrial design firm Birsel + Seck. Made of 75 percent recycled plastic and manufactured by a female-owned company in designer Bibi Seck’s birthplace of Senegal, Taboo was a groundbreaking design object in multiple ways, as was the choice to present the modest object amid an array of visually dazzling pieces. What conversations are potentially generated by the choice to display or acquire an object, and in today’s world of social media and information sharing, what do display and acquisition really mean for institutions and for individuals? Superscript’s programmatic counterpoint to their project On Display brings together the public with voices in the design and architecture world to comment on these topics, and thus activate free posters displayed in the exhibition space.

Opening Reception | Video: Marek Ther's Das Wandernde Sternelein

To enumerate all the possibilities of meaning and pathos one finds in the vast oeuvre of Marek Ther, who, in his late 20s, has already become a prolific video artist in the Czech Republic, one would have to write an entire book. Rather than producing a body of work that boasts a coherent message, Ther’s videos – incredibly short, cinematic, hilarious, and confusing – have concerned themselves with the enunciation of a definitive style, a style that is marked by the joyful revivification of a camp aesthetic that is as sophisticated as it is playful, as well as a flippant sense of humor that has its roots in Eastern European absurdism.
