City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Discussion | Overlapping Circles in Dance (Improvisation, CI, Performance, Practice, Human Collaboration)

A conversation with Nancy Stark Smith, K.J. Holmes, Jennifer Monson and Jen Rosenblit. Improvisation as a practice, and particularly the rich history of CI, has spread throughout the world in various permutations and with multiple offshoots, evolutions, hybrids, specializations, etc. With improvisation in some form or another as a now ubiquitous presence in much of contemporary dance, how are people grappling with the various practices of improvisation in the context of contemporary performance? How do we situate our dancing in the larger world? Is it performance? Practice? Who is it for and how does it serve and/or inspire us and others? What tools and materials are we using - and toward what ends?

Restaurants are ubiquitous, but few of us reflect on the number of workers and the labor issues involved in the industry. How well does the restaurant business do in providing good jobs, with decent wages, fair promotion policies, and health insurance and other benefits? What more could be done? Members of the Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York, an organization of restaurant workers, and representatives of the New York City Restaurant Industry Roundtable, a coalition of employers dedicated to creating decent jobs in retail food services, take part in this panel.

Discussion | Philanthropy as Diplomacy: The Private Funding of State Affairs

Panelists: Michael Hess, President, M&TCH Consulting and former Assistant Administrator, USAID Aryeh Neier, President Emeritus, Open Society Institute James Allen Smith, Vice President and Director of Research and Education, Rockefeller Archive Center Olivier Zunz, Commonwealth Professor of History, University of Virginia Philanthropy has been defined as private initiatives for public good, as distinct from government or public initiatives for public good. As private initiatives became increasingly institutionalized during the twentieth century with the Rothschild, Rockefeller, and Ford Foundations, both private and public institutions strove to support or change international approaches to governance, healthcare, and human rights. While some historians claim that the partnership between philanthropic organizations and government largely failed in the 1920s, others argue that powerful alliances predate World War I and continue to shape diplomacy at present. This panel will explore the private funding of affairs of state, as a dialogue which includes foundations and government, but also extends to individuals, entrepreneurs, corporations, and the military. Slide Lecture | Times editor Craig R. Whitney discusses his book Living with Guns: A Liberal's Case for the Second Amendment

This illustrated lecture reexamines America’s relationship with guns, showing how guns are an important part of American culture. The earliest colonists needed them to survive. We have nearly 300 million of them today. Trying to restrict gun ownership doesn’t effectively deter crime—we need to get serious about what actually works. The author shows that, if we focus on controlling violence rather than guns themselves, the Second Amendment may not be so lethal as the left would like to think.
