Discussion | Youth, Education, and Social Change in Contemporary Cambodia: The Story of the Ponheary Ly Foundation

In November of 2012, President Obama made a diplomatic visit to the Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia. Obama is the first US president to set foot on Cambodian soil since the American bombing of the country from 1969-1975, leading up to the treacherous reign of the Khmer Rouge and the subsequent genocide killing approximately 2 million people. In the decades following the official collapse of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia has continued to struggle with a legacy of deeply entrenched marginalization and exploitation for its people. It faces massive challenges in the areas of educational quality and access, poverty reduction, the management of infectious diseases, and the restoration and creation of economic opportunities for children and youth comprising the majority of the country’s population. In their presentation, Ponheary Ly and Lori Carlson of The Ponheary Ly Foundation tell the story of one organization’s attempt to foster locally situated, sustainable social transformation in a nation heavily ensconced in the politics of international development and foreign aid. By focusing on access to quality education as an entry point for addressing a range of social issues, The Ponheary Ly Foundation creates comprehensive initiatives that strengthen the inherent capacity of the younger generation so they may lead their country toward a self-determined, equitable, and just future.

Men and women 150 years ago grappled with information overload by making scrapbooks—ancient ancestors of Facebook and blogging. Both African American and women’s rights scrapbook-makers documented their experiences in the public realm and experimented with ways to present them. In this lecture, Ellen Gruber Garvey reveals a previously unexplored layer of American popular culture, where activists collected and constructed new narratives by creating unwritten histories in books they “wrote” with scissors and paste. Ellen Gruber Garvey is professor of English at New Jersey City University.
