It has been said that art takes nature as its model. The beauty of nature has inspired many great Americans to create photographic masterpieces. From the wildlife portraits of John James Audubon to the stunning black and white photography of Ansel Adams, nature has been an inspiration to artists for centuries. The Urban Park Ranger Art and Photography programs allow you to interpret the natural would through artistic expression, while learning about the local environment. Art programs may include drawing, painting, poetry and nature art projects. All supplies are provided unless otherwise indicated. All art programs are family friendly, but may be challenging for younger children. All Photography programs are for digital cameras and you must provide your own camera. DSLR camera preferred, but all cameras are welcome.

Lecture | After the Fire: How the Struggles of Jewish Workers Became America’s, Too


In March 1911, a fire at the Triangle Factory killed 146 mostly young, immigrant woman and also changed America. The struggles over sweatshop conditions had been a Jewish concern for many years, and Jewish organizations and labor unions kept the issue in the public's eye. The fire brought what had been up until then an issue that raged in the Lower Eastside into the mainstream. This talk will discuss how Jewish workers and organizations profoundly shaped American policy and politics in the wake of the 1911 fire. Scholar and prolific author Dr. Richard Greenwald will be the guest speaker. Dr. Greenwald is the senior editor of the book series “Work in the Americas." He blogs on workplace issues for In These Times and his essays and articles have appeared in In These Times, The Progressive, Businessweek, The Brooklyn Rail, The Rumpus, Bookforum, and The Wall Street Journal among other place.

In this choreographic comedy, Geneva-based Foofwa d’Imobilité, a former member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, conjures three legends of dance who died within a month of one another in 2009: the king of pop, Michael Jackson; the queen of tanztheater, Pina Bausch; and the emperor of the revolution dance, Merce Cunningham. Dante’s cousin, Danze Alleghieridere, narrates their path to paradise. Jazz | Marc Perrenoud Trio, Swiss Jazz Ensemble


Hailed as “remarkable” by Jazzman (France) and “always masterful” by All About Jazz, Marc Perrenoud is one of the most acclaimed Swiss jazz musicians of his generation. For his first New York appearance, the 30-year old pianist-composer brings his trio to the Allen Room to celebrate the release of their third album, Two Lost Churches (March 2012). Along with Marco Müller on double bass and Cyril Regamey on drums, he will perform compositions that defy convention while honoring the tradition of great jazz. The trio’s repertoire will also include Perrenoud’s own compositions.
