Conference | Vulnerability: The Human and the Humanities

This spring’s Scholar and Feminist Conference, “Vulnerability: The Human and the Humanities,” will explore the concept of vulnerability as a fundamental and universal characteristic of the human condition. We are vulnerable on many different levels—from our own embodiment; to our place within a community; to the privileges we may lack as a result of our gender, race, or class. Scholars and activists alike have explored the way in which an understanding of these common vulnerabilities has the potential to transform our kinship structures, communities, and institutions into ones that recognize the importance of human interdependency. The conference will provide a space for thinking about how to incorporate a vision of shared vulnerability into social and political discussions, bringing together academics, activists and professionals working among especially vulnerable populations—prisoners, communities affected by environmental degradation, and so on—as well as activists who leverage vulnerability as an critical and effective organizing tool. The conference will feature a plenary panel on the emerging field of vulnerability studies, as well as an afternoon artist’s talk by feminist performance artist Coco Fusco. Lunchtime workshops will center around topics including prisions and capital punishment; immigration; environmental justice; and the politics of care. The complete program and conference registration will be posted here when it beocmes available. Plenary panelists include: Colin Dayan, Robert Penn Warren Professor of the Humanities at Vanderbilt University. Martha Albertson Fineman, Robert W. Woodruff Professor at Emory Law School, founder and director of the Feminism and Legal Theory Project, and co-director of Emory’s Race and Difference Initiative. Ilaria Vanni, Head of the Cultural Studies Group, and Deputy Director of the Transforming Cultures Research Centre at the University of Technology, Sydney. Ewa Plonowska Ziarek, Julian Park Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Buffalo.

Conference | Labor Migration in the Post-Soviet World (Impetus, Experience, Effects, Policy)

People have long moved from one land to another in the hopes of improving their lot. The political changes since 1989 unleashed new streams of migration of labor involving the states of the former Soviet sphere, in multiple directions: from Central Asia and the Caucasus to Russia, from countries of the Eastern and Central Europe westward to the EU, within Central Asia and into Central Asia from the Far East. And while these recent streams of labor migration bear some resemblance to older familiar cases in the region (the Gastarbeiter from Turkey and Yugoslavia in Western Europe), the new labor migration differs in fundamental ways: the new streams of migration are multidirectional and chaotic; the responses of receptor countries, from citizens and employers to police and policy makers, have become more problematic; the remittances and the effects on the home country are more profound. This international, interdisciplinary conference examines instances of migration in the post-Soviet sphere and beyond—Central Asia to Russia, Lithuania and Poland to the EU—both to explicate these individual cases but also to see how they contribute to methodological and theoretical issues in migration studies.

Opening Reception | Mixed-Media Works: Lin Esser's Unconventional Tableaux

Esser's new exhibition began, in part, as an effort to replace a Dia de los Muertos box lost during childhood. Further inspired by the eccentric subjects of English symbolism, sinister figures of the Renaissance and the anthropomorphic tableaux of Victorian naturalism, Esser soon found himself caught up in the creation of an entire body of three-dimensional works that he later began calling "tableaux." His dark introspective vision and extensive experience with film and theater lend a sense of the dramatic to these macabre yet playful narratives about the joys and sorrow of everyday life and beyond. The son of a mechanical engineer, Esser spent his early childhood watching and emulating his father draft the intricate exploded drawings and cross sections of elaborate multi-cogged machinery. As a teenager, he declined a formal art education to follow work as a skilled double bass player and multi-instrumentalist. In the mid-eighties Esser continued his pursuit of dual careers by relocating to New York City. He worked with several prestigious theaters, publications and venues including the Actors Studio, Plymouth Theater and Local Project Arts Collective. Esser has scored and directed short films, exhibited his artwork and authored workshops for regional artists and musicians. He can be heard and seen as one third of the composition team currently re-scoring Hans Richter's 1921 film Rhythmus 21. And, most recently, Esser's artwork and music are the focus of Director/Cinematographer Dave Davidson's short film, "Contacting the Living," in which eight tableaux are featured.

Film | Fusion Film Festival: Jennifer Siebel Newsom's Miss Representation (2011)

This searing documentary explores how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in influential positions in America and challenges the media's limiting and often disparaging portrayals of women, which make it difficult for the average girl to see herself as powerful. Stories from teenagers and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, activists, and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Lisa Ling, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as the film accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave you shaken and armed with a new perspective. 85 min. Opening Reception | Group Show: 21 Etchings and Poems

An in-depth rare exhibition of 21 Etchings and Poems. The complete 1960 limited edition was conceived by Peter Grippe in 1951 when he took over the directorship of Atelier 17, an internationally hailed graphic workshop. This etching project, possibly the first of its kind in the United States, joined two creative disciplines–art and poetry. Poets and artists invited for this historic collaboration worked in the almost forgotten tradition of the Book of Kells and William Blake’s Illuminated poems.
