It is here, as much as anywhere, where American history started. It's where the first US Congress assembled and produced the Bill of Rights and where President George Washington took his first oath of office. It's here where the world's most important stock exchange and one of the most famous bridges stand. And it is here where an unspeakable tragedy took place and where a rebirth is underway.

Harlem's history is also one of the city's most dramatic, having gone through many ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic changes over the past roughly 400 years, which have resulted in a diverse array of places of worship, theaters, homes and eating establishments.

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Korea Gayoje (‘music festival’) blending traditional Korean sounds with glam rock, contemporary world music and hip-hop.The Year of the Ox is a rap duo with Korean roots. Comprised of two hip-hop performers from Virginia, “Lyricks” and “JL,” they embody the traits of the Ox, according to the Zodiac. What do you get when you mix authentic, traditional Korean vocals with rock band flare, then add in some extravagant visuals and a transfixing stage presence? You get SsingSsing, Korea’s top rock/folk fusion act. There are few band across the world that so expertly meld classic, traditional instruments and vocalization with entirely modern ones as Coreyah. Indeed, their new breed of music breaks the barrier between the traditional and the contemporary.

Photojournalism is no longer about being just a good photographer, but entails being a “Swiss Army Knife’ in the field. This means taking video, knowing geography, writing a good story and caption, taking notes, recording interviews and being active in social media including Twitter, Facebook and other mediums. By becoming proficient at various skills, the photographer becomes more essential to the newsroom and an indispensable force in providing content. As aggregation becomes more common-place for some newsrooms, editors realize more than ever that providing original quality content retains readers and makes the individual more necessary in a more competitive environment. Todd Maisel, Senior Staff Photographer, New York Daily News, will give some secrets to his success in the face of reductions in staff and cuts to photographic budgets in a challenging media.

While the work produced by Gauguin in Tahiti has been extensively catalogued and analyzed over the past century, his last years in Atuona on the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas have received only glancing attention. Focusing on the painter’s art and writing from this period, Caroline Boyle-Turner and Maia Nuku will discuss Gauguin’s deep engagement with questions of traditional Marquesan beliefs, colonial and church authority and changing definitions of “exotic.”
