Although world famous, Harlem may be New York's best kept secret with some of the city's best architecture, food, music and people. Harlem's history is also one of the city's most dramatic, having gone through many ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic changes over the past roughly 400 years, which have resulted in a diverse array of places of worship, theaters, homes and eating establishments.

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Arguably the world's most valuable, busiest and most crowded pieces of real estate, Midtown Manhattan is what most visitors think of when they think of New York City. Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. But just behind the massive facades, lie facinating histories just waiting to be unveiled.

Taikoza has created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums, and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings: big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance. Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza -- the group that started the renaissance of taiko in Japan in the '60s and introduced Taiko worldwide.

ALICE SMITH makes "soulful music draped with vocal stylings that run the spectrum from playful, to seductive, to eerily haunting." (Okayplayer) Her voice is a rare and deeply expressive instrument, anchoring her R&B-meets-jazz songwriting with a treasure trove of memorable, personal lyrics. Raised between Washington, D.C. and Augusta, Georgia, on a steady diet of gospel, pop, soul and go-go, Alice is a passionate singer, songwriter, and producer who has an unshakable sense of self and an attitude to match. BILAL is one of the great veterans of New York City neo-soul and "one of the most dynamic and progressive vocalists in contemporary music." (AllMusic) He has collaborated with everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Beyonce, Erykah Badu to Common. Performance Space 122’s Ramp residency program is designed to foster the creation of ambitious, new work from New York City-based emerging artists through space, time and invaluable technical resources. Each residency period culminates in free showings open to the public. Tess Dworman will use her week-long residency to experiment with merging very different kinds of choreographic and improvisational material to become part of the same world. She initiated the process with a collage-like structure that pins together brief self-contained dances and situations varying in representationalism, abstraction, emptiness, realism, and fantasy. The performers conjure these qualities through scores that amplify ambiguity as a skill and the craft of oscillating between image and sensation.

With incredible talent and perseverance, Chip Shelton has earned an undisputed reputation as one of the most renowned flutists in the world of jazz. The flute, with its high-pitched tone, didn’t start out as a swinging jazz instrument until Frank Wess first popularized it as a member of Count Basie’s Big Band. He set the standard for such noted flutists as Yusef Lateef, Herbie Mann, Charles Lloyd, and Hubert Laws that further propelled the instrument into the jazz spotlight.
