Do you feel you shouldn’t have to sell yourself? Are you uncomfortable around people who are talking about their accomplishments? Do you find yourself looking for ways to get out of conversations rather than into them? In managing our careers we have to be regularly in touch with people who we don’t know well and whose good opinion we need. This puts us in the awkward position of talking to and potentially wanting favors from people we are not yet friendly with. ,br> Coach Win Sheffield discusses ways to move ahead in the face of shyness and reluctance to talk to strangers.

Dance Performance | Choreographer/dancer Maria Hassabi performs Movement #2

Hassabi’s performance will act as an informal preview for the completed workSTAGED, which will premiere at The Kitchen in October 2016 as part of the French Institute Alliance Française’s Crossing the Line Festival. Hassabi presents a new composition for four dancers, Simon Courchel, Hristoula Harakas, Molly Lieber, and Oisín Monaghan. The artist imagines the work as four concurrent solo performances, rather than as a single, cohesive composition, and underscores this fragmented presentation by separating the dancers over numerous blocks of the park. Thus, viewers encounter each dancer in sequence, connecting their movements through imagination rather than vision. In this way, the performance is necessarily experienced in motion, as visitors move from one end of the park to the other. Takes place June 28-30.

Screening | Dance on Film: A Ballerina’s Tale / Jeremy McQueen’s The Black Iris Project

A Ballerina’s Tale - Iconic ballerina Misty Copeland made history when she became the first African-American woman to be named principal dancer of the legendary American Ballet Theater. Get the incredible, behind-the-scenes story of how she overcame a tumultuous upbringing and near career-ending injuries to become one of the most revered dancers of her generation in A Ballerina’s Tale. Jeremy McQueen’s The Black Iris Project - Black artistry has changed lives and has demonstrated its potential to spark social change through its cultural pervasiveness exhibited from the Harlem Renaissance to modern day hip hop. Founded in 2016 by award-winning emerging choreographer, Jeremy McQueen, The Black Iris Project highlights the accomplishments of Black professional ballet dancers, jazz and classical composers, and other creative artists through educational outreach efforts and the public presentation of new works inspired by Black heritage. With recent incidents of violence and police brutality against the Black community documented in the media, it is increasingly important for the Black community to continually be inspired and reminded of its unique spirit and strength. The Black Iris Project has been established to harness the Black community’s inherent creative spirit to encourage and inspire youth of color to pursue art, movement and music as an expressive outlet and a means for collective healing. Jeremy McQueen and company will perform the entire Black Iris ballet. Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Black Iris III” painting and set to Felix Mendelssohn’s “Piano Trio No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 66.” This work was originally commissioned by the Joffrey Academy of Dance, and premiered on March 10, 2013 in Chicago.
