Performance | The Planet-Eaters: Seconds: Performance Art by Will Rawls

Part-dance, part-concert, and part-travelogue, The Planet-Eaters: Seconds explores a duet as an intimate exchange of rhythms. In this reconfigured study of the original The Planet-Eaters, Rawls brings new material to his reflection on Balkan folklore and the exhilarating failures of becoming self and other. What starts as a game of counting for two performers finishes with a fragmented encounter of themselves that is epic, incidental, singular, plural, and neither here nor there.

Dance Performance | Riff this, Riff that: Dance and Live Music That Straddles Cultures

Riff this, Riff that is a first-time collaboration between dancer/choreographer Ephrat Asherie and jazz pianist/composer Ehud Asherie. Although born in Israel and raised by parents with strong Israeli identities, both siblings naturally gravitated towards two quintessentially American art forms which stem from the African American community, jazz and hip hop, respectively. Straddling cultures gave both Ehud and Ephrat a lens through which to make sense of the world. Riff this, Riff that will use movement and live music to explore the connections between these styles and the myriad of rhythms, both musical and motional, that continue to exist and expand within and around these forms.

Concert | Sounds of French Rock: CharlElie Couture / Yael Naim / General Elektriks / La Femme

Born in Nancy, France, in February 1956, and graduate of the Fine Arts school, CharlElie is a multidisciplinary artist, whose work covers the exploratory fields of image, writing and music. Since his signature on Island Records by the notorious Chris Blackwell, the success of his poetic-rock-blues music albums has not stopped him from continuing his exploration in painting, sculpture and photography. Music is anything but a job to Yael Naim and David Donatien. It’s entwined in every aspect of life for these musical and romantic partners, who recorded their third album together, 2010’s She Was a Boy, in their family home on the outskirts of Paris. Having left his adopted land of California for the city of Berlin, French singer, keyboard-player, and producer Hervé Salters released To Be A Stranger, his 4th album as General Elektriks, in February 2016. Clearly high on the radical streak that permeates the German capital, this new record conjures up a brash array of funk keyboards, hip hop beats, pop melodies and vibrant tones. Since hitting the west coast, La Femme’s reputation for finely tuned and taught stark anthems has spread like sea spray. Their debut album, 2013’s Psycho Tropical Berlin, immediately hit No.1 on the French digital charts and the group promptly became the cover darlings for Magic, and went on to make crowds dance across Europe’s premier festivals.
