Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” ,br> Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm.

Talk | DeRay McKesson discusses his own story of activism

Movements throughout history have sought to change systems of inequality and spurred leaders from within those movements to enter the political arena as candidates for elected office. Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, ran a formidable campaign for mayor of Oakland, California, in 1973. DeRay McKesson was led to activism following the death of Michael Brown and the subsequent protests in Ferguson, Missouri. McKesson, a Baltimore native, returned to his hometown in 2015 to run for mayor after becoming a voice in the efforts to confront systems and structures that lead to police killings of black and other minority populations.

Talk | Making the Invisible Visible: NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project - Documenting Place-Based Cultural Heritage

With introductory remarks by historian George Chauncey (Gay New York) and a brief salute to special guest Dick Leitsch, pioneering Mattachine Society activist. Despite common misconception, New York City’s LGBT community has a long and vibrant history that predates the 1969 Stonewall rebellion. Existing historic sites associated with arts and culture, important social centers such as bars and LGBT organizational locations, residences of notable figures, and activism (to name a few) span as far back as the 18th century. Yet despite this history, these tangible reminders of the city’s LGBT community remain largely unknown and potentially endangered. At this program, learn about the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project and its ongoing survey of historic and cultural sites throughout the five boroughs. Directors Andrew S. Dolkart, Ken Lustbader, and Jay Shockley and project manager Amanda Davis will also discuss the interactive online map of sites that the public will be able to use in order to learn more about LGBT place-based history and that will utilize the resources of the New York Public Library’s extensive LGBT collections.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Park: The Taming of the Shrew, an All-Female Production

The New York Times called Phyllida Lloyd’s all-female production of Henry IV “a celebration of the metamorphic wonder of live stage acting.” This summer, the Tony nominated director turns Shakespeare’s zany comedy of the sexes The Taming the Shrew on its head, with an all-female cast and a bold new take. With Olivier nominee Cush Jumbo and Tony and Olivier winner Janet McTeer.
