Dance Performance | Dance: White by Michelle Boulé

White is a subtle yet profound performance that explores what choreography means and its relationship to bodies in space and time. Boulé’s inspiration for White began during the early part of creating the dance when she asked herself if movement, like sound, could be perceived and transmitted across space with an invisible, yet perceivable resonance. The dance will be performed in an area of high foot traffic to the sound and the beat of the city, with audiences playing a key part in experience as a dance choreographed that examines movement, and the five senses.

Dance Performance | Dance: The Set Up: Saya Lei by Wally Cardona, Jennifer Lacey and Jonathan Bepler

“…Utterly original, deeply comic and deviously beautiful. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that both Ms. Lacey and Mr. Cardona are effortlessly charismatic performers.” – The New York Times, September 24, 2011, Brian Seibert The Set Up: Saya Lei is the 6th installment in a series of 8 full-length dances that displace contemporary practice by living temporarily within a distinct tradition of mastery. Initiated in 2012, each installment launches with “American contemporary” artists meeting a “master of a traditional”, sometimes “ancient”, form. The most recent installment began in Mandalay, Myanmar, with Saya Lei (“Young Teacher”), a 70-year-old dance master who has devoted his life to preserving the Mandalay-style of Burmese classical arts.

Opening Reception | Group Show: The Secret Life

Caught in a tangle between scientific truth and our own spiritual longing, is a secret life which is undeniable and relentless. We are pleased to present a cross-generational group exhibition, inspired by the 1979 documentary film 'The Secret Life of Plants', featuring artists who approach the natural world with an intuitive sense of curiosity and profound inventiveness. The film, as well as the book on which it is based, revealed unusual phenomena regarding plants, such as perception and feeling, discovered through controversial experimentation. The proposed theories have effectively acted as a stimulus for continued inquiry into materiality, structures of language and time, and the unexpected links between the human anatomy and plants. As these ideas gain momentum they steer towards outrageous results and it is within this wildly imaginative and perhaps hallucinatory state that we find ourselves living the secret life. Here we can be both affectionate as well as methodical while we investigate our connection to other worlds and the multiplicity of the past and the future. For the opening, Sergei Tcherepnin will perform with his work 'Garden of Tongues', 2014.

Book Signing | Artist Walton Ford signs copies of his book Pancha Tantra

At first glance, Walton Ford’s large-scale, highly-detailed watercolors of animals recall the prints of 19th century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear. A closer look reveals a complex and disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, sly jokes, and allusions to the ‘operatic’ nature of traditional natural history.

Dance Performance | Dance: A Body in a Station by Eiko

“Eiko’s dancing demanded a certain degree of patience from the viewer. Each deliberate movement carried the aura of a secret ritual. She had the uncanny knack of arranging her limbs in a way that made them seem abstracted, bones piled at oblique angles rather than a congruent human form. The cumulative effect holds a strange beauty, arresting both the visual and kinesthetic senses.” – The Brooklyn Rail, December 18, 2014, Madison Mainwaring

Concert | Grammy winners Roomful of Teeth perform from their CD Render

“Their singing is fiercely beautiful and bravely, utterly exposed. There’s no electronic wash to hide imperfections, no other instruments add layers of sound. It’s just these eight voices gleefully filling up a huge amount of space, and drawing upon a whole world’s worth of non-traditional techniques.” – NPR Roomful of Teeth is a Grammy-award winning vocal project founded by Brad Wells and dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice. Drawing from their studies with masters of non-classical traditions from around the world, the eight-person ensemble is continually growing its vocabulary of singing techniques, which include Tuvan throat singing, yodeling, belting, Inuit throat singing, Korean P’ansori, Georgian singing, Sardinian cantu a tenore, Hindustani music and Persian classical singing.
