Dance Performance | Dance: A Body in a Station by Eiko

“Eiko’s dancing demanded a certain degree of patience from the viewer. Each deliberate movement carried the aura of a secret ritual. She had the uncanny knack of arranging her limbs in a way that made them seem abstracted, bones piled at oblique angles rather than a congruent human form. The cumulative effect holds a strange beauty, arresting both the visual and kinesthetic senses.” – The Brooklyn Rail, December 18, 2014, Madison Mainwaring

Concert | Pop Bands: The Ballroom Thieves / Driftwood

For The Ballroom Thieves, the band’s journey has only just begun, but their roots already run quite deep. Now, on A Wolf in the Doorway the Thieves find themselves taking the very idea of “roots” and creating ways to make its associated sound progress, while making its encompassing spirit glow. Stylistically, the trio finds a captivating mélange of acoustic styles, blending folk conventions with modern hymnals, delta blues grit with rich harmonies, exploring the basic constructions of pop music while almost wholeheartedly rejecting its restrictions at the same time. From the Binghamton, New York music scene comes Driftwood, a band with a rock ‘n’ roll soul and a folk art mind. Carving out a name for themselves with electrifying live performances, they bring one of the most unique, raw sounds to the Americana/roots music scene. Incorporating upright bass, banjo, acoustic guitar and violin, the ghost of traditional American folk music lives in their palette. But the melodies, the harmonies and the lyrics are something else entirely.

Concert | Olga Bell’s Krai, Exceptional Young Russian Musician

“Krai…gives forgotten stretches of Russian land a name for themselves, and in that regard this inventive and progressive release from an exceptionally talented young musician is a success.” –– Line of Best Fit, April 24, 2014, John Bell Krai is the Russian word for edge, limit, frontier or hinterland. Present-day Russia is divided into a myriad of ‘federal subjects’, including nine krais. In this capacity the term is a political designation, like ‘territory’, but for the earliest Russians these places represented both the promise and terror of the vast unknown. The live incarnation of Krai features Olga plus five vocalists singing entirely in Russian, supported by a electro-acoustic chamber ensemble of cello, electric guitar, bass, pitched drums, mallet percussion and electronics. The setting for this performance of Krai is Pier 15, where a video installation showing real and imagined landscapes from each territory completes a unique and immersive experience of Olga Bell’s groundbreaking, cross-cultural work.
