Talk | Theater of the Oppressed

Katy Rubin says, "We will open the talk with two monologues from The Housing Circus, a play we created with the Concrete Justice troupe, made up of actors with experience of homelessness, during our residency. Then I will speak, alongside the actors, about the importance of initiating social change from the direct experience of, and in the voices of, those confronting the oppressions. We will speak to our ethical understanding of Theater of the Oppressed, which is to approach social change from a position of solidarity and collective risk-taking." Katy Rubin, Executive Director of Theater of the Oppressed NYC, is a Joker, actor and circus artist. She has facilitated and directed Forum and Legislative Theater workshops and performances in partnership with various communities including homeless adults and youth; LGBT homeless teens; people living with HIV/AIDS; recent immigrants; and court-involved youth and adults. Katy trained with Augusto Boal at the Center for Theatre of the Oppressed—Rio de Janeiro, and later with Jana Sanskriti in India, Mind the Gap in Yorkshire and Cardboard Citizens in London. She has trained facilitators in Nicaragua, the Netherlands, Norway and New Orleans as well as NYC.

Workshop | Studio Squared: The Art of the Graphic Novel

Studio Squared is a series of informal art-making workshops aimed at making a wide range of studio practices accessible to adult audiences. Each workshop focuses on a particular theme and creative process inspired by our exhibitions, and explores methods of creative production through an experiential approach. This two-part session invites workshop participants to experiment with techniques and methods that are foundational to Trenton Doyle Hancock’s practice through hands-on tutorials. Join illustrator, painter and graphic novelist Jennifer Yvette Cruté and learn to storyboard and illustrate your own graphic novel. After a presentation on her dynamic practice — including her influences growing up and experience in commercial illustration — Cruté will provide an overview of the basics of producing visual narratives, and elaborate upon the power of the graphic novel as a tool of activism and self-expression. Materials will be provided; however, participants may also bring an iPad or laptop with drawing programs.

Dance Performance | Dance: Rachel Tess' These are bodies, These are motions, This is the place

In a landscape of palpable textures, performers Rachel Tess and Benoît Lachambre navigate the link between inner body and tangible object and animating the inanimate through an exploration of the senses in These are bodies, These are motions, This is the place. Skin becomes canvas, bodies become abstracted, glimpses of the recognizable are sometimes present, and the byproduct of contact with the outer environment is an acoustic/rhythmic transmission of the sensuous. Letting be, being with, and sensing the profundity of silence allows the performers to refer unobtrusively to the complexities of human relationships.

Concert | Alicia Svigals: Violin Mass Appeal

Join together with dozens of fellow violinists in a unique expression of the beauty of klezmer. Alicia Svigals, widely regarded as one of klezmer’s greatest exponents, will lead a group of violinists of all ages and of varied experience levels in a free, outdoor event on the summer solstice. Svigals has written a suite of tunes that will take players and listeners on a tour of the basic klezmer forms: horas, bulgars, freylekhs, and more. Playing the piece will start you on the path to the secrets of an authentic Yiddish playing style – the timbres and rhythmic feel, the modes and dance beats, slides, trills and krekhzn that make a violinist sound like a bonafide klezmer.

Dance Performance | Souleymane Badolo’s Dance my life

Inspired by the contrast in the paces of life between his native home of Burkina Faso and his adopted home of New York City, Souleymane Badolo’s Dance my life is a celebration that crosses boundaries to highlight the similarities of what we all experience. In the fast-paced world of the present, there is a sense of urgency to accomplish as much as possible as fast as possible. Yet, people everywhere still feel and think about many of the same things – including work, family, prayer, joy, and sadness. This commonality of the human experience is at the center of Dance my life.

Concert | Indie Sounds: Jafé / Thicket and Thistle / Justin Dean Thomas

Quazimodo Jones is the inevitable evolution of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jafé Paulino. As a founding member and lead singer of New York City's blues rock/reggae trio, VIVA MAYDAY, Jafé and co-founder Gian Stone created a unique and distinguishable sound from 2007-2013 while earning a buzz in the scene for their highly energetic live performances, opening up for legendary acts Living Colour, Dead Prez, Das EFX, Styles P, Dawn Penn, and The Burnt Sugar Arkestra Chamber. After a long hiatus intertwined with further soul searching, Jafé took on the persona of Mr. Jones as a means to share his journey of spirit vs. ego in the modern world. Thicket and Thistle is a NYC-based folk band and writing/performance collective, focused on devising new works which interweave theatre and original music. Justin Dean Thomas is a NYC singer songwriter. Originally from Boston, he cut his teeth playing everywhere he could hitchhiking his way across America immersing himself in folk, country, rhythm and blues and rock n roll. Lending his time to poetry and songwriting, he developed a sound all his own. Living in NYC, he got made his foray singing in the subways and clubs.

Bringing together innovators and seminal voices in the field of comics, this panel seeks to discuss and contextualize comics as sites of activism, black ownership and agency. Four representatives from the Women In Comics NYC Collective International will present the important work they have done in confronting and combating marginalization within the field, and expose the power of comics to rewrite women and people of color as heroes, leaders and agents of social change. Together, and with the participation of the audience, the panel will explore the particularity of black characters and develop a new vocabulary for owning authentic representation within the field.

Opening Reception | Group Show: Gray would be the color, if I had a heart.

This show assembles a group of artworks that evoke a particular feeling of lonely listlessness, embedded with the faint glimmer of hope that the idea of improvement might be possible. Laying in the gutter, but staring at the stars. Straining to see into the distance. The reaction to this arrested position of something potentially better just out of reach hovers between thoughtful reverie, heartbroken nostalgia, and helpless sloth. But with an increasingly gnawing discontent under the skin comes a more pressing and fevered need for an undefined change.

Sueño will feature a diverse group of 20 actors, singers, musicians, dancers, and puppeteers. The show includes over 50 carnival puppets, stilt walkers and masks including “Vejigantes and Cabezudos”… folkloric characters from Puerto Rico, used in festival celebrations. The presentation of Shakespeare’s work in Latin America dates back to the 1800s, but rarely do New Yorkers get a chance to see adapted Latino versions of the master’s plays. In English. Bring your own chair or blanket or just stand.
