Dance Performance | Souleymane Badolo’s Dance my life

Inspired by the contrast in the paces of life between his native home of Burkina Faso and his adopted home of New York City, Souleymane Badolo’s Dance my life is a celebration that crosses boundaries to highlight the similarities of what we all experience. In the fast-paced world of the present, there is a sense of urgency to accomplish as much as possible as fast as possible. Yet, people everywhere still feel and think about many of the same things – including work, family, prayer, joy, and sadness. This commonality of the human experience is at the center of Dance my life.

Theater | United States of Banana, a Play That Explores the Post-9/11 American Psyche

Adapted for the stage by Juan Pablo Felix and based upon the book by Giannina Braschi, United States of Banana dramatizes the post-911 American psyche around the politics of empire and independence. Hamlet and Zarathustra join Giannina on a quest to liberate the Puerto Rican prisoner Segismundo from the dungeon of the Statue of Liberty, where he has been imprisoned by his father, the King of the United States of Banana, for more than 100 years for the crime of being born. The work depicts New York City as the Darwinist capital of the capitalist word and U.S.imperialism as doomed as a chicken with its head cut off. Latin American immigrants are granted American passports, Puerto Rico is declared the 51st state, and then comes the revolution.

Dance Performance | Court/Garden: Dance Performance Inspired by Imperial Ballets

Court/Garden is a 3-act dance and live music performance that is inspired by imperial ballets of King Louis XIV of France’s courts, the spectatorship of the stage, and the use of video feeds as cultural, social, and political frames of experience. This piece contrasts the power dynamics between audience and performer over several time periods and mediums including runway fashion, Baroque classical ballet, the YouTube / selfie generation, and in contemporary concert dance.
