Workshop | Citizen Cartography: Building a Virtual Atlas of New York

Help NYPL build the geospatial library of the future! This workshop will get you oriented with the set of tools the Library has developed that enables librarians and the general public to add valuable geographic context to old maps by overlaying digital images of historical maps onto a contemporary digital map through a process called georectification, or "warping" maps. This means overlaying digital images of historic maps onto a contemporary digital map (similar to Google Maps), transforming them into tiles of a virtual atlas.

Concert | Rockers: Pete Molinari / Julia Haltigan

Pete Molinari is fast establishing himself as one of the UK's most exciting musical talents. Born into a large Maltese, Italian and Egyptian family in Kent, the young musician became fascinated with the 1960s' folk of Leadbelly, Hank Williams, and Woody Guthrie. After reading the beat writings of Jack Kerouac, Pete set off for New York where he honed his craft in the blues clubs of the East Village. Then he travelled to Memphis, New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles when he could, before returning home to record his debut album “Walking Off The Map” with the help of Billy Childish. While recording his follow up album, “A Virtual Landslide” at Toe Rag Studios in London, Pete began working with producer Liam Watson, invigorating his sound with a full band, thus uniquely modernizing a historic sound. A blonde bombshell with a rebel spirit, Julia Haltigan embodies the classic grit and style of the Lower East Side’s insurgent nature. Clad in leather, Julia’s dominating stage presence mesmerizes crowds. She uses her booming and soulful voice to draw the audience into her seductive embrace.

Staged Reading | Play Reading: The Marquis Flight by Frederic Morton

Vienna-born Jewish writer Frederic Morton, who passed away on April 20 at the age of 90, had offered to the venue to present his latest play, which sadly also became his final. What was originally planned to be another evening with and in the presence of this great internationally acclaimed writer, will now be presented in Fred Morton’s memoriam. Directed by John Wooten, The Marquis Flight starts as a realistic plot “about the catastrophes of contemporary success”, as the playwright himself had described it to us. Based on the story of an Upper East Side executive’s plane trip to Paris, the lines between reality and (science) fiction gradually blur taking the audience into a surreal fantasy world.
