Performance |
Show casts a focus on the elements of live performance in a bid to make them plastic and palpable. At the core of its exploration is a paradoxical condition that must be negotiated and resolved by any live work; the attempt to be present in a moment of expression, while existing in an awareness caught by a set of definitive frames. Existing beyond the frame of the theater, new parameters of performance will emerge as Show is set within the conditions of the open air, vulnerable to passersby and other variants.

Dance Performance |
A dance meditation on the relationship between aesthetics and ideology. Choreographer luciana achugar revisits the work in a site-based context. Originally co-commissioned by Abrons Arts Center and The Chocolate Factory, and premiering in May 2012, the work presents dance as a celebration of experience, and pleasure as the consummation of experience. In Feel...Form, four women engage in a psychedelia-inspired kaleidoscope that multiplies their experience and reflects both rigorous formalism and corporeal excess.

New York Classical Theatre's roving production of Twelfth Night recasts the beloved comedy's setting as fin de siècle New York. Dubbed “an epiphany” by The New York Times, The Yehudim is a mixed ensemble of voices, vintage keyboards, electric guitars and basses, and percussion, conceived and directed by composer and New Amsterdam co-director Judd Greenstein. Taking the composer-led super-groups of the 1970s as inspiration – from Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Meredith Monk to Fela Kuti, Isaac Hayes and Herbie Hancock – The Yehudim explores characters from the Hebrew Bible, using the strange stories of their lives and the ancient writings around their characters to weave contemporary narratives that are Passions for our time. Roomful of Teeth perform an integrated set featuring new work by indie-rock superstar Merrill Garbus (pictured) of tUnE-yArDs and electro-acoustic composer and New Amsterdam co-director William Brittelle written for the astoundingly talented multi-stylistic 8-person vocal group. Roomful studies and incorporates non-classical vocal practices, combines them with western styles, and develops new compositions using the fullest possible range of vocal techniques. The set will include Garbus performing selections from the tUne-yArDs catalog with Roomful as backing group, and the world premiere of a new arrangement by William Brittelle for the octet backed by The Yehudim.

Dance Performance |
Electric Midwife is choreographer Beth Gill’s most recent work. Premiering in 2011, it received multiple Bessie awards, and continues to be performed both nationally and internationally. Conceived from a fusion of concept and form, Electric Midwife is a performance of symmetry, in which six women form two trios that mirror each other’s movements with a kind of hyper-precision. The dancers’ actions create an intricately patterned tapestry in which the lines of their bodies trace the space and outline the two corridors within which they encompass.

Rosalind, Shakespeare's most breathtaking heroine, and her boyfriend Orlando find themselves in the enchanted Forest of Arden, where all the world's a stage, and where sudden infatuation is as confusing as it is beautiful. Along with other "country copulatives," they discover that nothing transforms, redeems, or enriches experience quite as powerfully as love. As You Like It has everything we adore about Shakespearean comedy: mistaken identity, cross-dressing, madness, mayhem, rage, lust, laughter, and of course plenty of romance, both heartbreaking and joyous. Featuring Brendan Averett, Andre Braugher, Donna Lynne Champlin, Grantham Coleman, Jon DeVries, MacIntyre Dixon, Susannah Flood, David Furr, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Andrew Hovelson, Robert Joy, Jesse Lenat, Erik Mathew, Omar Metwally, Oliver Platt, Lily Rabe, Will Rogers, Michael Rudko, Justine Salata, Paul Saylor, Anna Phyllis Smith, Stephen Spinella, and Brendan Titley.
