Discussion | Design and Style - Elgin Park

You won’t find the town of Elgin Park on a map, but you will find it all over the web and in the media. Called an “Internet phenomenon” by The New York Times, Michael Paul Smith’s Flickr site has received over 20 million hits since he first posted his convincing yet dreamlike photographs of an imaginary town with perfectly executed miniature street scenes and model vintage cars, which are shot outdoors against actual backgrounds. Smith shows images of some of his creations, reproduced in his book Elgin Park: An Ideal American Town, and discusses the cultural influences and impact of Elgin Park with curator David McFadden.

Opening Reception | Duncan Hannah's Country Life and Other Collages

Duncan Hannah began making collages in the late 1970s, inspired by artists such as Joe Brainard, Kurt Schwitters and Peter Blake. There is a tangibility and sensuality to collage, a multi-layered and complex medium that suggests many histories and experiences – ranging from art, literature, design, music, history and pornography, as in Hannah’s intricate yet simple collages: a classic black and white nude amid a National Geographic Magazine cover from 1926; the profile of a topless woman, her eyes close, mouth slightly open against a wide blue sky with creamy white clouds reminiscent of Magritte and a heading that reads "Country Life."

Opening Reception | Group Exhibition: The Peripheterists

Tony Bennett unsuspectingly coined a new term of surprising relevance when he once said he liked what Oskar Kokoschka did "along the peripheter." Though meaning the perimeter and periphery in the painting itself, he innocently zeroed in on a murky netherworld away from the formal where success and failure, acceptance and indifference, and Tony Bennett and Oskar Kokoschka meet. Like these two disparate personalities, the artists in The Peripheterists elude the standard definition of outsiders to form a diverse and unaligned but oddly complimentary non-scene that doesn’t really register with either the hoi polloi or the intelligentsia. In many cases low-key and unsung though prodigiously gifted, all are fairly unconcerned with and unknown in that rarely satisfying milieu known as "The Art World." Featuring work by: Nicole Andrews Brandes, Natascha Belt, Dave Bevan, Dwayne Boone, Gerardo Castillo, Rick Charnoski, Edward Colver, Ale Formenti, Renée French, Joseph Griffith, Thomas Hauser, Mark Hubbard, Chuckie Johnson, Gary Kachadourian, Taliah Lempert, Doug Magnuson, Alfredo Martinez, William McCurtin, Stu Mead, James Niehues, Gloria Park, Daniel Pineda, Randy Turner, Dennis Tyfus, Unidentified Cameroonian barbershop painters, Sereno Wilson, Jesse Wines, Jason Wright. Shown: Gerardo Castillo, Untitled, 2006.
