Play | Hudson Warehouse presents Shakespeare's Othello

Shakespeare's tragedy, believed to have been written in 1603. It is based on the story "A Moorish Captain" by Cinthio, first published in 1565. This tightly constructed work revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his beloved wife, Desdemona; his loyal lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted but ultimately unfaithful ensign, Iago. Given its varied and enduring themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike, and has been the source for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations. With influences ranging from African folk melodies and desert blues to jazz, pop, reggae, funk, and soul, an evening with songwriter, guitarist, and singer Daby Touré is true global adventure. Jazz | Jazz: Gregory Porter / Marcus Strickland and Twi-Life

The Brooklyn-based singer Gregory Porter showcases “outstanding original songs, erudite lyrics and social comment, top drawer musicianship and improvisation, and a voice to die for” (Jazz Wise) — qualities that led L’Express to call him “the next great voice in jazz.” Multi-reedist Marcus Strickland and his electrifying band Twi-Life set the tone. The songs on Strickland’s recent Blue Note/Revive debut Nihil Novi, produced by Meshell Ndegeocello and released earlier this year, offer an “array of styles, harmonic textures, and dynamics, and reveal his preoccupation with hip-hop beatmaking.” (AllMusic)

Tony-winning director Daniel Sullivan returns with one of the Bard’s most rarely produced plays, Troilus and Cressida. Both warriors and lovers play hard to get in this surprisingly modern epic about the hot blood, hot thoughts and hot deeds of the ancient Greeks. In the 7th year of the Trojan War, Troilus, a young prince, pines for the affections of Cressida, a bright young woman who knows how to play it cool. Meanwhile, the heroes of the Iliad – Ajax, Ulysses, Achilles and the kings they serve - debate whether to return the dangerously beautiful captive Helen or continue to fight without end. Nations and lovers alike do battle in this funny, piercing drama about romance and revenge in a world at war.
