Performance | Performance Art: Eduardo Navarro's We who spin around you

A new work that invites visitors to consider their changing relationship to the sun. The performance transforms the park into an open-air theater with performances on and around the park. Eduardo Navarro approaches each project like a case study, wherein he determines to become or create something new. Navarro repeatedly submerges himself within new non-artistic disciplines – be they scientific, legal, or spiritual – consequently rejecting the distance between himself and his object of study. For example, in his recent work Poema Volcánico, the artist hiked into the crater of the active volcano Guagua Pichincha in Ecuador, where he exposed litmus paper to the sulfurous fumes of the volcano, effectively allowing the volcano’s energy to paint. We who spin around you is a new work realized for the High Line at the Rail Yards. In the late afternoon as the sun begins to lower in the sky, Navarro invites participants to don custom-made bronze masks designed to help them safely view the sun, transforming it into a tiny dark green sphere. Then, an astrophysicist gives a brief lecture on solar history, and our changing relationship to science in the context of astronomy and solar studies. The work – situated at one of High Line visitors’ favorite spots to watch the sunset – invites viewers to think about their place in the surrounding terrestrial and celestial worlds. This event takes place July 19-21.

Author Reading | Wayne Koestenbaum reads from his book Notes on Glaze: 18 Photographic Investigations

In the spring of 2010, the Brooklyn-based quarterly magazine Cabinet invited poet and cultural critic Wayne Koestenbaum to begin writing a regular column. Entitled “Legend,” the column had a highly unusual premise; every three months, the editors of the magazine would ask Koestenbaum to write one or more extended captions for a single photograph with which they had provided him. Drawn from obscure vernacular, commercial, and scientific sources, all of the images were unfamiliar to the author. After eighteen installments, Koestenbaum concluded his column in the winter of 2015. Featuring an introductory essay by the author, Notes on Glaze collects all the “Legend” columns, as well as their accompanying photographs.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Park: Troilus and Cressida

Tony-winning director Daniel Sullivan returns with one of the Bard’s most rarely produced plays, Troilus and Cressida. Both warriors and lovers play hard to get in this surprisingly modern epic about the hot blood, hot thoughts and hot deeds of the ancient Greeks. In the 7th year of the Trojan War, Troilus, a young prince, pines for the affections of Cressida, a bright young woman who knows how to play it cool. Meanwhile, the heroes of the Iliad – Ajax, Ulysses, Achilles and the kings they serve - debate whether to return the dangerously beautiful captive Helen or continue to fight without end. Nations and lovers alike do battle in this funny, piercing drama about romance and revenge in a world at war.
