Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Concert | Latin Sounds: Mexrrissey / Los Cafres / La Dame Blanche

In Mexico, Morrissey has always been a prophet with honour. His songs of love, loss and longing, with powerful imagery and metaphors have found a huge audience and chimed with generations raised on rancheras and mariachis and their singers who were not afraid to cross the line. Now the love can be returned, with a band made in Mexico City reinventing Morrissey’s songs south of the border. Together they sound like a brass and accordion led combo from the smallest village with the biggest bleeding heart. Taking us on a journey of love, loss and longing is an incredible team of big hitters from Mexico’s rock and pop world, who immediately said yes to Mexrrissey’s invitation. Los Cafres are one of Latin America’s most iconic reggae bands. Formed in Buenos Aires, the band created their signature sound by combining reggae roots with Spanish-language lyrics. In their 25-year span, Los Cafres have release 13 albums, each one reaching Gold/Platinum status in Argentina. In 2013 they received a Latin Grammy nomination for their CD/DVD “Los Cafres – 25 Años de Música.” Yaite Ramos, a Cuban musician living in Paris, is the daughter of Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos (musical director of the Buena Vista Social Club Orchestra). Previously a flautist and part of the chorus with Sargento Garcia, she also was the lead singer of El Hijo de la Cumbia live act. Today, she presents the second album of La Dame Blanche – directed by Marc Babylotion Damblé (Sargento Garcia, Amadou and Mariam, Orishas), French Beat Maker – and composed under the artistic direction of Emiliano Gomez, a.k.a El Hijo de la Cumbia, an Argentinian producer renowned for his fusion of Cumbia and urban sounds.

Author Reading | Geoffrey Cowan reads from his book Let the People Rule: Theodore Roosevelt and the Birth of the Presidential Primary

Let the People Rule tells the exhilarating story of the four-month campaign that changed American politics forever. In 1912 Theodore Roosevelt came out of retirement to challenge his close friend and handpicked successor, William Howard Taft, for the Republican Party nomination. To overcome the power of the incumbent, TR seized on the idea of presidential primaries, telling bosses everywhere to “Let the People Rule.” The cheers and jeers of rowdy supporters and detractors echo from Geoffrey Cowan’s pages as he explores TR’s fight-to-the-finish battle to win popular support. After sweeping nine out of thirteen primaries, he felt entitled to the nomination. But the party bosses proved too powerful, leading Roosevelt to walk out of the convention and create a new political party of his own.
